Environmental Engineer at Relativity Space in Long Beach, CA

The Mission/Outcomes and Objectives

As Environmental Engineer, you will work closely with internal engineering, construction, and operations teams to define environmental requirements and will be our owner’s representative with consultants, contractors, and government entities. You will work closely with other launch team members including program management, infrastructure, fluids, electrical, command & control, launch-mechanical, and may support Pad Operations during launch processing and operations.

You will be responsible for initial site planning, development, NEPA compliance, DEP compliance, state and local permitting & compliance, and will be responsible for ongoing inspections, sampling, maintenance, documenting, and reporting. You will also be responsible for developing request for proposals, competitive bidding, bid evaluations, sub-contractor selections, and sub-contractor management as applicable to execute and maintain environmental compliance. You will plan and execute your scope of work to operate best-in-class launch pad solutions to meet stringent cost and schedule requirements in a very competitive environment.

You have a strong background in field work, technical reporting, and project management, and you have a passion for taking ideas and designs and making them become a reality in the built environment.

You are a learner and doer at heart, who continuously engages across technical and operations teams to achieve real world results. You are willing to travel up to 50% to support ongoing development, design, construction, testing, and operations across Relativity’s sites including Vandenberg Air Force Base, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Stennis Space Center, and other sites as needed by the company.

Minimum Required Skills and Competencies

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or related technical discipline.
• Minimum 5+ years of experience working as an environmental engineer or environmental scientist in the aerospace or construction. industry with a mix of hands-on field experience and project management experience.
• Strong background in NEPA, DEP, state, & local environmental compliance with regards to air emissions, noise emissions, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, OSHA, spill prevention control and countermeasure, natural resources, potable water, wastewater, and/or NPDES.
• Experience working with federal, state, and local government agencies.
• Experience with permitting including determination, pulling, maintaining, and closing out.
• Experience with project scoping, budgeting, scheduling from both a day-to-day perspective as well as overall program management.
• Experience with development projects located on federal lands including USAF and/or NASA.
• Experience creating Environmental Baseline Surveys, Biological Assessments, Cultural Resource Surveys, and/or NEPA Environmental Assessments.
• Understanding of standard construction procedures, best practices, means & methods.
• Demonstrated customer service excellence and ability to communicate highly effectively in verbal/written form with internal and external customers.
• Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
• High organizational skills in managing multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to perform and manage technically complex projects using independent judgment and personal initiative.
• Recognize and act on opportunities; maintain flexibility to adjust as requirements and priorities shift or constraints change and anticipate them when possible.
• Ability to work in dynamic environments to execute real-time tasks in tight operation windows.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

• Advanced degree or training in science, engineering, construction, operations, or project management.
• 40-hr HAZWOPER training & certificate.
• DOT HazMat Compliance Training.
• Hazardous materials abatement and disposal including DEP notifications, chain-of-custody, and manifest tracking.
• Familiar with aerospace planning, procedures and operations, and safety (including LOTO).
• Experience, training, and education in three of the above.
