Job Description

Old Dominion Freight Line is recruiting for an Environmental Compliance Manager.  This position will be soley responsible for Environmental Compliance for the State of California and all of Old Dominions facilities in the state.  The duties will include: Develop, coordinate, maintain and oversee environmental compliance programs for all California locations.


  • Perform duties related to Storm water and Emergency Response Planning, Hazardous Materials and select air quality compliance programs (including but not limited to those) NPDES, SPCC/AST, UST, RCRA, CUPA, CARB and EPCRA regulations
  • Make regulatory interpretations and develop BMP’s and compliance audit protocols. Perform and track environmental compliance audit results and follow up on corrective action recommendations
  • Develop and coordinate training programs to meet regulatory requirements including creating systems to ensure training is documented and tracked for all relevant personnel
  • Plan, organize and oversee assigned work programs, including monitoring compliance deadlines & work schedules
  • Direct and evaluate the work performed on behalf of Old Dominion by third party contractors ensuring all reports for regulatory agencies are submitted to meet compliance deadlines
  • Determine Federal, California and local environmental regulatory requirements for any new Old Dominion location and submit necessary permit applications and documentation to the regulatory agencies to ensure compliance
  • Maintain knowledge of current and changing environmental regulations, including Federal, California and local that will apply to Old Dominion operations, assets and maintenance facilities and communicate to the appropriate personnel
  • Act as a liaison with California and Federal regulatory inspectors and coordinate external audits by regulatory agencies
  • Conduct field inspections and audits of operations and regulatory compliance records
  • Maintain and update various manuals required by environmental regulations
  • Maintain familiarity with freight handling/operations systems and functions of Over, Short & Damaged (OS&D) recouping requirements and practices



  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or related field and/or related experience


  • 5 years of experience with Environmental compliance
  • Knowledge of CAA, CWA, RCRA, DOT, UST/AST, CERCLA and EPCRA regulations
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office including the ability to understand and develop complex Excel spreadsheets
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
