Job Description:

This person will be based at a specialty-chemicals manufacturing facility near Joliet, IL which is about an hour from downtown Chicago. This plant employs approximately 150 people and utilizes a wide range of unit operations ranging from reaction to distillation to alkylation and hydrogenation. This person will be responsible for the engineering team on-site and will have 10 direct reports (3 process engineers, 3 project engineers, 3 automation engineers and a PSM Manager) and will also be responsible for about 10 contractors. This role is open due to an upcoming retirement – the idea is to get someone into this role before the incumbent retires in order to have time for the out-going engineering manager to share information with the new engineering manager. The main focus of this role in the short-term will be on capital projects – those will be everything from new equipment installations to reactor capacity expansion projects to infrastructure projects, etc. This role will also oversee the work of the process engineers who will be focused on continuous improvement and plant troubleshooting. The role features minimal travel and someone can easily live in the Western Suburbs of Chicago and commute to this facility. Along with base salary, this company has a generous bonus program and benefits package. Relocation assistance is available. This position reports to the site director and this role will be a very visible one within the company.

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. in Engineering required – highly prefer Chemical Engineering but will consider Mechanical Engineering
  • 8+ years supervisory experience is ideal – must be able to show the ability to management upward as well as downward; overall, candidates should have 10-15 years of post-college, industry experience
  • Must have previously been in an Engineering Manager role
  • Must be familiar with PSM regulations and must have worked in PSM-regulated facilities
  • Must have experience managing capital small capital projects from cradle to grave
  • A big plus would be six-sigma knowledge/experience and/or prior experienceworking with SAP


$130K - $140K
$130K - $140K base, plus bonus bonus
