What You Will Do

The Mechanical Team in AOT-MDE is seeking a motivated Engineered Systems Tec 4 machinist to support LANSCE accelerator maintenance and upgrade operations. Successful candidate will also support these maintenance and upgrade operations in the field as needed.

Accelerator Operations and Technology - Mechanical Design Engineering (AOT-MDE) is primarily focused on maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) Accelerator. MDE provides engineering and design support to Mechanical Engineering projects both within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and external customers.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to; troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, electro-mechanical equipment, general shop tools and equipment; and providing custom fabrications to engineered solutions.

The candidate will need to provide demonstrated experience in machine shop fabrication to support accelerator operations and a variety of projects, order spare parts, maintain an on-line spares inventory and a maintenance database.

This position involves supporting LANSCE 24-hour, 7-day per week beam operations, which will involve work at odd hours (when required) and on-call duties. Must be willing to work overtime occasionally and serve on call to support 24/7 accelerator operation and maintenance.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience machining custom fabrications from drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings drafted utilizing ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Experience with CAD and CAM software
  • Demonstrated experience with CNC manufacturing and inspection techniques and procedures.
  • Work successfully in a team environment and exhibit collaborative behavior.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic with ability to work independently and as part of a team under both general and/or specific instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and a commitment to doing work safely and securely.
  • Be capable and willing to work in radiation areas while adhering to ALARA principles [MH1.1]
  • Demonstrated skills in using personal computers for word processing and spreadsheet data entry.
  • Demonstrated ability to check, correct, and provide constructive feed-back to designers regarding their designs.
  • Design, fabrication, and/or maintenance of accelerator equipment.
  • Able to acquire a Q clearance
Education/Experience: Position requires an associate's degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Degree in electromechanical/mechanical or vacuum technology preferred; accredited journeyman machinist

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience machining a variety of materials with lathes, mills, drill presses, and saws, and other industrial apparatus Applied knowledge of principles of vacuum design and technology.
  • Experience with CMM inspection machines or other inspection technology.
  • Proven track record of contributing to high-impact R&D projects through design, prototyping, and fabrication.
  • Certified crane and forklift operator.
  • Experience in the fabrication of mechanical parts working from sketches, formal drawings, or oral instructions. Proficiency in the operational use of and calibration of optical tooling equipment, such as jig transits, sight levels, and theodolites.
  • Knowledge of various alignment techniques such as LASER Tracker and Spatial Analyzer software.

Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
