The Civil Systems Group Operational Programs (OP) team has responsibility for the mission success of multi-agency operational satellite programs where NASA has responsibility for mission system development and integration. These programs are Landsat, Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES). Their mission systems integrate spacecraft bus(es), instrument suites, ground stations, command, control and data processing systems, and operations and engineering staffs distributed worldwide. The success of these highly integrated systems demands a rigorous, disciplined systems engineering approach that harmonizes system development, procurement practices, systems integration, operations readiness, and transition from development to operations. Aerospace’s role is to serve as trusted members of multi-agency, multi-contractor development, integration, and/or operations teams to drive mission success.


This role provides direct engineering support to the NASA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Flight Project in the area of spacecraft and instrument development. The specific role is to perform as the Flight Project’s Electrical Systems Lead Engineer for the JPSS-2, -3, and -4 satellites presently in development. The Electrical Systems Lead is the Flight Project’s technical representative for spacecraft and instrument electrical systems. Development phases relevant to this role include: design, component procurement, assembly, integration, test, verification, validation, on-orbit activation and commissioning, and on-orbit operations. JPSS-2 is entering the integration and test phase, and JPSS-3/4 are intended to be copies. The duties include: perform technical interchange with JPSS spacecraft and instrument providers, collect and synthesize objective information relevant to current development phase; review spacecraft and instrument provider CDRLs relevant to Electrical Systems, engage with and lead functional teams, to include off-site Aerospace subject-matter experts, to identify, mitigate, and resolve technical risks and/or issues impacting mission success; as appropriate, balance risks to achieve the optimal solution for mission success; objectively assess and communicate technical status.



  • A baccalaureate degree or equivalent experience in engineering, physical science, or equivalent technical discipline is required.
  • A minimum of twelve years of applicable direct experience with spacecraft and/or instrument electrical systems is required.
  • Experience with NASA flight system development practices and approaches is required.
  • Proven knowledge and expertise in at least one core area of electrical systems engineering— requirements, design, component procurement and/or assembly, integration, test, verification, validation, EMI/EMC —is required.
  • The proven capability to identify, assess, and resolve technical issues from a systems perspective is required.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment and coordinate work across multiple areas is required.
  • Self-sufficiency, initiative, and excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
  • The ability and motivation to work effectively and collaboratively with Government, Aerospace and Contractor personnel are required.


  • An advanced degree in engineering, physical science, or equivalent technical discipline is highly desired.
  • Experience in multiple areas of systems engineering is highly desired.
  • The ability to analyze a broad array of technical information and identify salient points is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform independent analysis and prepare and present clear and concise technical reports is highly desired.
  • The proven ability to form, organize, and lead technical teams to successful outcomes in highly desired.
  • Established ability and experience working joint projects between multiple government agencies and organizations are highly desired.
