Electrical Engineer/Substation Project Manager

This Engineer’s primary focus will be as a Project and Client Manager with a focus on delivering greenfield and brownfield substation projects and/or studies.  The individual may also be asked to assist with proposal writing, project scoping and cost estimating, and business development activities with regional utilities, contractors, and renewable generation owners.   

Specific technical skills include those listed below.  Extensive knowledge of all listed skills is not required as long as the individual has the desire and ability to learn quickly and apply published engineering standards.

  • Substation protection and control design
    • SLD, 3LD, schematics, wiring diagrams, relay settings, SCADA
  • Substation physical above and below grade design
    • grounding, conduit, layout, elevations, equipment specification
  • Substation studies
    • system modeling, short circuit, power flow, arc-flash, TCCs, lightning, lighting, insulation coordination, grounding, battery sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill
  • Management of civil and structural designs by others

Other duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead a team of engineers and technicians in utility substation design and studies
  • Manage Projects—maintain technical, budget, scope, and schedule performance as well as client and staff expectations
  • Develop scope of work, design cost estimate, and prepare proposal for new projects
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with clients, contractors, and vendors
  • Ability to effectively communicate with design team, clients and contractors (written and verbal)
  • Ability to provide mentoring, training and technical leadership to staff

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other applicable field from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineering License (electrical) or ability to test immediately
  • Minimum of 5+ years of electrical engineering experience
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills
  • Recent experience with business development and winning projects
  • Knowledge of substation protection & control design theories and applications
  • Knowledge of outdoor physical substation design
  • Ability to supervise the use of CAD tools and QC review of design deliverables  
  • Basic understanding of utility system operation, maintenance, and planning

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Established client relationships and ability to develop new project opportunities
  • Previous experience working as a consultant, or for a small business
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university with a focus on Power System Studies
  • Knowledge of operation and design of substation SCADA and Telecom systems
  • Experience working on projects for large utilities and/or with design build contracts
  • Experience and knowledge with CAE tools, including SDS
