Position Purpose & Summary


The Electrical Engineer (Power Systems Owner) position is responsible for Power System Engineering and Maintenance that considers safety, reliability, costs, quality, capacity, and environment, as well as, equipment and miscellaneous material specification, procurement and expediting. The duties of an Electrical Engineer may also include bid package development, review and contractor selection, review of bid results and contract award, and construction management considering safety, schedule, efficiency, maintenance, cost management and documentation. This position also involves start-up and commissioning activities involving drawings, maintenance files, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), equipment/instrumentation checkout and programming/interlock verification and development of others to include mentoring, teaching and training. This position may also be required to provide technical and engineering focus to the Process Development Groups (PDG) priorities. They carry out maintenance and reliability responsibilities, business case development for projects, performing engineering operations, managing best practice implementation projects, addressing gaps in best practice performance, monitoring key measures performance and addressing gaps, and assisting in justification of capital expenses and resource allocations. This position also involves development, analysis, interpretation, and utilization of data and information during project inception and execution; training at the site to include front-line personnel and leadership of best practices; and mentoring and training of others to include front-line technicians, operations and less experienced engineers. An Electrical Engineer must leverage all skill sets between PDG groups cross functionally.


Principal Accountabilities


50% - Become the subject matter expert (SME) for the plant in this specific area (Industrial Power Systems). Identify and address methods to improve safety, equipment/system efficiency, performance, and reliability. Ensure knowledge is transferred to other locations. Assist other locations in becoming best in class in this area.

15% - Act is liaison between third party contract firms for electrical maintenance and capital project construction. Help set priorities and develop appropriate multi-year schedule and budgets with Automation, Electrical and Instrumentation (AEI), Maintenance and Reliability (M&R) and Engineering Leaders.

10% - Plan and execute (through contractors) Site Outage Power System Activities which includes: temporary power plans; planned power system maintenance work; project commissioning; startup and troubleshooting.

10% - Act as liaison between project engineering organization and AEI in ensuring capital projects follow Cargill AEI Standards and best practices. Ensure capital project engineering engage the correct AEI Resources and correctly consider site standards in purchasing and deploying AEI technology.

5% - Develop various options to achieve project objectives. Develop capital budget, schedule, operating costs and benefits for each option. Perform financial analysis on each option and select best option.

5% - Assist operations with troubleshooting, problem solving and optimization.

5% - Energy and utility calculations including cost analysis and curtailment analysis and planning as well as any other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years of engineering and/or operations experience.
  • Power Distribution experience.
  • Demonstration of strong leadership skills and potential. Interest in future leadership roles (AEI Team Leader and/or Power PDG).
  • Ability to be self-directed with high personal initiative.
  • High levels of organization, communication and documentation skills required to be successful. Demonstrate ability to manage multiple projects and communicate goals, objectives and accomplishments to a broad audience.
  • Demonstrate high level of technical ability and ability to understand complex operational, engineering and business activities.
  • Implement technical solutions and best practices, locally and throughout the organization.
  • Availability to be on call 24/7


Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum 2 years in Project Engineering and/or Operations Supervision. Experience outside of project engineering is a plus, such as Operations, PDG, or Maintenance and Reliability.
  • Minimum 3 years Power Engineering Experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute projects (nominally $1MM or more).
  • Working knowledge of AEI engineering and safety standards IEEE, NETA, ISA, NFPA, and NEC. (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, National Electrical Testing Association, Instrument Society of America, National Electrical Code).
  • Working knowledge of contracting strategies (Price Not to Exceed, Fixed Sum, Time & Materials, etc.)
  • Power Process Engineering including SKM Modeling, Power One Line Diagrams, Control Schematics, P&ID development, and other appropriate electrical documentation.
  • Specify Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) applications including harmonic abatement and bus interface (DeviceNet).
  • Experience with Cargill commitment system for Capital Expense funds requests.
  • Knowledge of the ASAP accounting system. Ability to enter requisitions, jobs and work orders.

  • Working conceptual knowledge of core processes at the location (i.e., wet mill, fructose refinery, industrial starch, etc.).

  • Cargill's Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) Course, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-hour construction safety training, food safety training, and ISO Training.

  • Knowledge of Corn Milling Project Management Guidelines.

  • Demonstrate high level of technical ability and ability to understand complex operational, engineering and business activities

  • Demonstration of strong leadership skills and potential.  Interest in future leadership role (AEI Team Leader and/or Power PDG).

  • Ability to be self-directed with high personal initiative.
