Responsibilities:The Ecodesign Team within Environmental Compliance & Sustainability is responsible for carrying out our ecodesign strategy for consumer hardware (Surface computers and accessories, Xbox consoles and accessories, PC hardware). We quantify the environmental impact of our products and we work with product design and development engineers to identify and prioritize opportunities to reduce products' environmental impact.
In this role, you will conduct environmental lifecycle assessments (LCA) to quantify products' environmental impacts and work to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and usefulness of these assessments. You will report on Microsoft Devices' carbon footprint and other environmental impacts. You will work with external organizations to ensure that Microsoft's LCA and carbon accounting methodology aligns with existing and developing international standards. You will engage with product design and development engineers to ensure that new products achieve improvements in environmental sustainability metrics and meet the requirements necessary to obtain ecolabels (EPEAT and others). You will work with product designers and developers to execute on our ecodesign roadmap through improvements in product durability, repairability, recyclability, energy efficiency, use of environmentally preferable materials, efficiency in manufacturing, minimizing waste, circularity, etc.
The position involves working closely with compliance, mechanical, reliability, design for repair, and design for manufacturing engineers, supply chain and sourcing mangers, and program managers.
Qualifications:Required Qualifications: - Degree in environmental science, materials science, electrical or mechanical engineering, or other relevant field
- Four or more years experience in performing and communicating product environmental lifecycle assessments (cradle to grave), preferably in the consumer electronics/ICT sector
- Experience working with CDP, Scope 3 carbon calculations, and external carbon reporting
- Knowledge of existing standards as well as organizations and consortiums on LCA & carbon accounting
- Experience obtaining third party verification of LCA and/or carbon accounting methodology
- Experience managing mid to large scale projects involving multiple stakeholders
- Knowledge of ecodesign principles
- Experience working with product development teams to implement ecodesign principles
- Subject matter expertise in consumer electronics design and development
- Data analytics and management skills
- Excellent analytical skills, hands on problem solving
Desired Qualifications: - Advanced degree MS or PhD, in a relevant discipline
- Experience working with production data such as bill of materials and full material declarations
- Knowledge of product environmental regulations, standards, and trends
- Experience setting and executing product-level environmental targets
- Coding knowledge or experience
- High degree of flexibility-willing to fill in the gaps and being self-sufficient when necessary
- Self-driven, results-oriented, and passionate about technology and product-making
- Passionate about environmental sustainability and making a difference at Microsoft and in the world
- Strong communication skills to manage cross-disciplinary discussions across diverse cultures with clarity and positivity
