PURPOSE:

The Medical Dosimetrist designs and performs all aspects of generating radiation dose distributions for brachy and teletherapy. The dosimetrist performs calculations in order to provide radiation treatment plans in accordance with radiation oncologists’ prescriptions under the direction of the physicist. The dosimetrist also assists any other staff member in the implementation of such processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designs treatment plans that will deliver the radiation dose in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription considering dose limiting structures in the design of such planunder the direction of the Medical Physicist. Communicate these aspects to physician for plan approval, and to the Radiation Therapist for plan implementation. Document doses in patients record in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription.
  • Supervise, perform, or assist in the production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
  • Assist the therapy staff in the implementation of the treatment plan and problem solving including: the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, or other treatment variables as well as image guided radiotherapy or respiratory gating.
  • Verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist.
  • Operate and perform quality assurance on the treatment planning computer under the direction of the Medical Physicist.
  • Operate and perform quality assurance of patient charts weekly and at end of treatment for accurate documentation and dosage.
  • Supervise, perform, or assist in the application of specific methods of dosimetry including ion chamber, TLD, or film measurement as directed by the Medical Physicist.
  • Maintain licensure, keeping abreast with new technology.
  • Teach applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students and residents, as assigned.
  • Follow HIPPA guidelines.
  • Assists with the planning and participates in supporting programs to ensure effective and safe use of radiation and radionuclides in patients.
  • Must possess mathematical skills including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus and be able to visualize objects in three-dimensional concepts to facilitate the treatment planning process.
  • Must be able to read, analyze and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Must be able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc). Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate of Science or Bachelor’s Degree in the physical or biological sciences and ARRT/RT(T) certification preferred.
  • Certification by or eligibility for the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board is preferred.
  • Two years of experience in medical dosimetry under the supervision of a Certified Medical Dosimetrist or Medical Physicist.
  • Basic understanding of the technical aspects of radiation oncology, medical physics and tolerance doses to derive computerized treatment plans. Working knowledge of radiation safety and correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement and other treatment variables.
  • Experience with IMRT, IGRT, CT based HDR preferred.
  • Must have basic computer and typing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
