The Director of Underwriting is responsible for developing the strategic direction and leading the personal auto underwriting teams with a focus on profitable growth, service excellence and sound underwriting.

Leads Underwriting managers and teams to achieve departmental goals; Responsible for minimizing the indemnity and expense impact on the combined loss ratio, increased profitability, service excellence and compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements. Leverages people, technology and processes to drive innovation within product line; Identifies opportunities to move department forward while still embracing Mercury’s fundamental underwriting core.

Proactively formulate and execute underwriting strategy by applying data/reporting, market knowledge and experience to identify opportunities and develop efficient processes

Balances risk management with the desire for short and long term strategic growth potential across a product line; Partner effectively with product and sales/marketing to maximize profitable results for assigned product line. Oversees strong agency relationships within regions and ensure service excellence standards are upheld.

Builds industry leading underwriting teams through strong leadership; Motivate Directors/Managers and ensure top talent is recruited, retained and developed. Responsible for recruitment, retention, performance management, employee motivation, morale, staff development and talent management within assigned product line.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

8+ years working in an underwriting leadership position

Position can be based in Brea, CA. Austin, TX and/or Clearwater, FL offices.
