Serves as director for both structural and civil engineering discipline focused design groups. . Responsible for discipline related contract document production. Responsible for managing a team of engineers engaged in review and approval of all in-house produced civil/structural related specifications and calculations. Responsible for enforcing engineering best practices for correctness of work, constructability, and compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
Manages supplementary staff / Task Order Consultant staff where needed or justified for in-house project design work.
Serves as discipline specific subject matter expert answering questions and resolving design related challenges.
Directs staff in the review and approval of shop drawings, product cut sheets, and construction schedules, as required.
Directs staff for coordination with Construction Managers on issues encountered during construction and in support of field modifications.
Establishes design parameters, scopes of work, and develops conceptual designs for proposed capital projects.
Directs the preparation of discipline related cost estimates, project budgets and construction schedules.
Directs and certifies the preparation of reports regarding the structural condition assessment and/or safety of NJTRANSIT owned facilities and structures.
Directs the review and interpretation of inhouse and external consultant prepared inspection reports for facilities and structures.
Directs the review of consultant prepared design and construction documents for correctness, best practices, and conformance with NJTRANSIT standards and procedures. Directs consultants on discipline related design approach where appropriate or required.
Directly coordinates with leadership of Rail Operations and Bus Operations groups to ensure planned and progressing capital projects meet their needs and can be constructed within agreed upon parameters.
Resolves daily staff issues for a team of 4-6 engineers plus supplementary staff, assigns work, coordinates staff training, prepares merit reviews, interviews/hires new employees.
Responsible for the development and execution of short and long-term department goals.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and ten (10) years of progressive applied experience in design and construction of heavy civil and/or structural design and management of civil/structural staff.
Professional Engineer/Registered Architect licensure in the State of New Jersey or obtain this license within 18 months of hire is required.
Subject matter expertise in either heavy horizontal or vertical structural engineering, or heavy civil highway or rail engineering is a must. Excellent communication skills are a must.
