About New York University

New York University is a private research university based in New York City. Founded in 1831 by Albert Gallatin as an institution to "admit based upon merit rather than birthright or social class", NYU's historical campus is in Greenwich Village. Chartered in 1831 by the New York State Legislature, NYU is today the largest private university in the United States by enrollment, with a total of 51,848 enrolled students in 2019. The university has maintained its main campus surrounding Washington Square Park since its founding; it was forced to sell its University Heights campus in the Bronx in 1973. Since then, the university has added buildings in Brooklyn's MetroTech Center and throughout Manhattan. NYU also has two overseas degree-granting campuses, as well as distant academic centers in Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Washington, D.C. NYU is organized into 10 undergraduate schools, including CAS, Gallatin School, Steinhart School, Stern School of Business, Tandon School of Engineering, and the Tisch School of Arts. NYU's 15 graduate schools include Grossman School of Medicine, NYU School of Law, Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, NYU School of Professional Studies, NYU School of Social Work, Rory Meyers School of Nursing, and Silver School of Social Work. The university also has internal academic centers such as the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Clive Davis Institute, NYU Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, NYU Institute of Fine Arts, and the NYU Langone Health System. The university has numerous research efforts, including founding the American Chemical Society, as well as receiving the largest outside funding level for hardware security of any institution in the United States. NYU is one of the top feeder schools for careers in finance and investment banking on Wall Street, accounting for 3.9% of hires in major financial institutions. Admissions is considered highly selective.
