The College of Graduate & Professional Studies (CGPS) at the University of New England (UNE) brings together all of the online programs at the University to maximize the strengths and opportunities for online learning at UNE. The Director, Research and Strategy is an experienced, highly collaborative individual with the proven ability to provide metric-driven and market-based strategic recommendations to build and strengthen product portfolios and contribute to college-level strategy. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Finance & Strategy, this position is responsible for the oversight of the Research & Strategy team (including Data Analytics) for the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. The Director is responsible and accountable for the planning and execution of strategic research and data assessments that influence the future of the Online College. The director supervises and leads the Research and Strategy department, the team dedicated to complex industry research that identifies and monitors competitors, and stays abreast of market conditions and trends to assist in student satisfaction, product development and launch, and ongoing alignment with market needs.

Additionally, the director develops and defines standardized processes for the Research and Strategy team, working toward producing thorough and accurate deliverables created via sound methodologies. In alignment with the CGPS mission, vision and values, this position advances the College focus on analytics and metric-driven decision making with a focus on ensuring quality client experience and outcomes. A successful candidate in this position will be an analytical, focused, and organized individual who is never satisfied with the status quo, constantly working to improve their team’s performance, processes, and initiatives. Must be driven to manage and lead others.

Scope and Authority:

  • FTEs Directly Supervised: 3-5+
  • Budget Expense: Operating budget, in collaboration with Assistant Dean
  • Budget Revenue: Contributes to tuition revenue stream attributable to new products
  • Regular Interactions: Meets on a regular basis with the Dean of CGPS, Associate Dean of CGPS, Assistant Dean of CGPS, Director colleagues within CGPS, Dean of University Admissions, University Registrar, The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, Information Technology Services, and Student Financial Services.



  • Contribute to the overall vision and goals for online learning at UNE
  • Provide CGPS leadership evidence and metrics to drive operational decision-making
  • Actively participate in the overall Strategic Plan of the Online College
  • Drive new business and opportunities for the College of Graduate and Professional Studies
  • Establish sound research and assessment processes for the College of Graduate and Professional Studies
  • Ensure the completion of detailed and in-depth market assessments for potential online programs
  • Define and develop research and data analysis approaches/methodologies
  • Guide teams in translating research into key findings and implications
  • Ensure timely and accurate delivery of all projects


  • Establish, refine, and lead the College-level survey processes around student and alumni satisfaction
  • Champion survey and data best practices across the College, working collaboratively with stakeholders on a college-wide survey strategy
  • Participate and Champion Data Governance and Data Integrity initiatives in CGPS and University-wide
  • Establish a cycle of metric reporting through the use of Salesforce dashboards and reports
  • Participate in data integration initiatives between CGPS and the college at large


  • Exercises full supervisory authority over professional staff withinCGPS Research & Strategy department (analytics manager, research and strategy analysts, junior researchers, and business/data analysts ), including:
    • Creatively leads, motivates and mentors and effective and accomplished staff
    • Confers regularly with staff to plan and coordinate activities, coordinate and review performance and resolve problems
    • Plans staffing needs and review unit performance and individual performance of direct reports
    • Provides opportunities and supports professional growth and development among staff
  • Responsible for all new hires in Research & Strategy, in compliance with established budget and human resource guidelines
  • Accountable for hiring high functioning and effective staff
  • Serve as a coach, mentor and advocate for all Research & Strategy staff
  • Adhere to ethical, legal/regulatory and accreditation standards
  • Create a positive environment that supports innovation, teamwork and successful outcomes
  • Model accountability and expect the same from team members
  • Manage conflict and change in ways that contribute to the long-term success of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies


  • Execute ongoing analysis and refinement of processes and communication streams to maintain efficiency across operations
  • Work cross-functionally with units in Finance & Strategy and Academic Operations to foster a culture of continual improvement of processes, product and performance
  • Monitor data consistently (weekly or more) to manage team and individual performance toward goals
  • Network and communicate with peers to facilitate operational standards and improvements
  • Analyze and recommend, and implement tools and resource to support research and data analysis strategy effectively


Master’s degree, plus 8-10 years combined experience in higher education, research and strategy, consulting or a related area, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Prior supervisory or team leadership experiencerequired.

  • Proven track-record of strong leadership and supervisory skills
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods required
  • Strong strategic marketing planning and implementation skills
  • Expert knowledge in standard concepts, practices and procedures in higher education
  • Proficient in MS Office – special emphasis on Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Strong relationship building skills, ability to develop strong cross functional working relationships with multiple departments
  • Strong analytical skills a must
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Leadership ability with strong interpersonal skills, team oriented and proactive
  • Strong project management and leadership skills
  • Ability to drive consensus among divergent groups
  • Excellent product marketing skills including the ability to provide business and competitive analysis, as well as market intelligence
  • Excellent organizational and follow through skills
