Responsibilities

This BKD group services “public entities” including municipalities, state agencies, public power and utilities, special districts, tribal governments, port authorities, airports, lotteries, universities, and others. The ideal candidate must demonstrate in-depth technical expertise with regard to public sector assurance matters, combined with a strong passion and proven record of public sector business development. We look to this professional to serve both as a quality control resource across multiple offices and lead regional practice development efforts in the public sector space. Depending on experience the role could be a senior manager or director level.

Technical Competence:

  • Identify audit risks and problems through review to ensure audit engagements are completed with defendable files and documentation
  • Participate in speaking and article writing opportunities and research technical issues unique to public sector entities
  • Perform secondary quality reviews for public sector assurance engagements
  • Research technical accounting and reporting issues and draw appropriate conclusions

Client:

  • Manage multiple client relationships, billings and resource needs working with public sector clients of various types and sizes
  • Manage multiple concurrent engagements without disruption or loss of control and within scheduled deadlines
  • Accurately manage, supervise and review audit engagements in a manner that meets professional technical requirements
  • Lead audit committee meetings and presentations

Business Development:

  • Build personal referral sources to lead strategic pursuits of prospective clients
  • Participate in business development and proposal opportunities including cross-selling of services
  • Participate in and/or lead regional marketing initiatives
  • Develop and/or enhance other skill-sets in order to deliver added value to clients

People Development:

  • Assist in managing, developing and coaching professional staff
  • Support efforts to attract and retain people resources including supervising and training engagement team members
  • Initiate efforts to develop the sales and marketing skills of industry team members

Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years (senior manager) or ten years (director) of audit experience in public accounting strongly preferred
  • Current CPA designation required
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting required
  • Proficient in MS Office suite—Word and Excel
  • Excellent client relationship skills, time management and project management skills
  • Strong knowledge and experience managing larger, more complex engagements
  • Knowledge and experience with audits of public sector entities required
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
