Overview

The Director, Public Relations provides strategic thought leadership in the development, integration and execution of public relations programs and activities directed toward the public, University students, industry and employees to increase visibility and positively impact the perception of University of Phoenix. The individual collaborates closely with Marketing brand, social, creative, design and custom teams, as well as senior management, to consistently generate creative, high-impact ideas that stretch thinking of the University’s relevance in the higher education marketplace and beyond. The Director, Public Relations manages the University’s PR agencies to leverage existing designs, partnerships and core brand stories, and orchestrate new events and initiatives that will create a differentiating story for University of Phoenix.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategic plan that includes public relations, social media and other marketing communications channels and partnerships to support the University’s business objectives and its programs; work closely with Marketing brand, social, creative, design and custom teams, as well as senior management, to internalize the University’s brand and confidently communicate externally about all aspects of the business
  • Manage the day-to-day efforts with our external public relations agency of record to ensure consistent, quality execution and overall return on investment/sales lift; work with the PR agency to distribute all pitches in targeted public relations campaigns to generate features in print, TV, radio, online and influencer outlets
  • Proactively manage professional relationships with local, regional and national media and influencers that will benefit the University by hosting media events, effectively communicating targeted story ideas, managing key media and influencer relationships, responding timely to media inquiries and supporting social public relations; ensure focus on key audiences of potential students, students, alumni and employers
  • Serve as a strategic communications advisor to senior and executive management; maintain awareness of brand reputation, keep track of public attitudes and flag possible consequences of decisions; develop key messages and manage issues and crisis communications
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout Marketing, including Acquisition, Retention and Loyalty teams to develop promotional and marketing activities, public relations communications and other initiatives to feed relevant owned channels to stimulate revenue opportunities
  • Select, mentor, coach and evaluate Public Relations staff; establish and monitor appropriate employee performance objectives; prepare and present performance development discussions and quarterly check-ins; implement mentoring and coaching plans, or disciplinary action, where appropriate

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or a related field, and seven (7) years of experience in public relations and/or marketing communications; OR
  • Ten (10) years of experience in public relations and/or marketing communications


Additional Requirements:

  • Proven relationships with media, community and business contracts that have delivered demonstrable results
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with a strong sense of quality and a creative mind set
  • Strong and effective interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in leveraging social medianetworks and related monitoring tools
  • Able to create newsworthy events, develop story ideas and follow through with pitch leads and creative digital execution
  • Understanding of the higher education category for the working adult
