The Director Product Management, Tagging, Taxonomy & Ontology will drive two forms of change throughout the organization: Define and implement a best of breed metamodel for the organization that affords data scientists and modelers to catalogue, search and reuse data assets and strategic coordination of teams to proactively and iteratively populate an enterprise taxonomy, documenting data for reuse. Together with key architects, stewards & librarians, product owners and engineers, the Director, Taxonomy & Ontology will begin the journey in a change management capacity with success defined by an agile, crowd sourced move toward a business-as-usual taxonomy management capability.


  • Set strategy development, deployment, and management of the availability, usability, integrity, and security of the taxonomy & tagging data employed to support the Nike business, ensuring we are meeting business needs while balancing quality, risk and cost
  • Evolve a modern, data science-oriented set of policies, principles and standards for taxonomy management (a metamodel for data asset categorization, search and usage), drawing on their experience in business information architecture
  • Be the Product Owner for taxonomy & ontology standards, processes, technologies & governance and provide council to establish and handle a baseline of a common understanding of data fields, schemas, processes and general standards
  • Champion the development of controlled vocabularies/thesauri, working with stakeholders to ensure consistent and accurate information across the enterprise
  • Develop strategy & processes for handling taxonomy development & implementation
  • Define strategy & structure for future Taxonomy / Attribution model and implement that model
  • Management of engineering resources responsible for implementation, maintenance & support of taxonomy technology
  • Continually evaluate and remediate issues of non-alignment with the enterprise program standards and the global taxonomy to improve usability of taxonomies in the enterprise
  • Influence and enable a federated team of taxonomists to ensure consistency
  • Develop and lead teams of data governance professionals responsible driving, deploying and leading data governance capability solutions
  • Own relationships with diverse business stakeholders to understand current and anticipate future business needs, understand requirements and define relevant strategic questions
  • Collaborate with senior management in developing recommendations around policies and standards for data governance, and implement and maintain a data governance structure aligned to enterprise data governance
  • Engage with the industry to learn about best practices, gain insightful competitive and regulatory intelligence to help in building excellence in our governance and quality initiatives
  • Build, lead, mentor, and inspire team(s); handling performance, goals and development potential


  • Bachelor's degree in business or a technical discipline, or equivalent level of experience in a data analysis/administration, data quality, data governance, or related field.
  • One of the following alternatives may be accepted:
PhD or Law + 6 yr;

Masters + 7 yrs;

Associates + 9 yrs;
High School + 10 yrs exp
  • 8-9 years of relevant leadership experience including developing and implementing data quality and data governance standards, practices, org structures, support models, and achieving business objectives
  • Experience in taxonomy & ontology strategy & solutions
  • Expert-level experience with data governance requirements and methods, with shown ability to work with business and analytics leaders to identify and align on workable business solutions to data quality requirements and challenges
  • Experience leading or working with Data Governance and/or data solutions professionals and/or teams
  • Involvement with data and information/content strategies involving collaborative solutions, predictive analytics and BI reporting, machine learning, knowledge systems, big data and the use of diverse sources of data/content
  • Expertise in working hand-in-hand with executive stakeholders to successfully support business performance and goals while building/achieving appropriate levels of data quality
  • Serve as a liaison between Business and Functional areas and technology to ensure that data related business requirements for protecting sensitive data are clearly defined, communicated, well understood and considered as part of operational prioritization and planning
  • Strong track record of leading change in a complex, matrix organization
  • Knowledge of data governance practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets and approaches related to data protection
  • Expert interpersonal, written and verbal skills with shown ability to educate, inform, persuade, and achieve understanding and buy-in on data quality/data governance needs across different functions, levels and customers
  • Experience working in a global business environment preferred
  • Good understanding of key topics in data governance, security and marketing science, data science, and applied analytics
  • Knowledge of data governance practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets and approaches related to data protection
  • Knowledge of data related government regulatory requirements and emerging trends and issues
