Our client is a well established manufacturer of heavy commercial vehicles, near Pleasanton California--They need a Director of Full Vehicle Engineering, so ideally someone who has extensive experience overseeing full vehicle development.

The Director of Vehicle Engineering is a role vital to client's growth and future product development.This position will lead a team of engineering professionals responsible for developing complete vehicle level bus designsand systems integration, establishingand executingtesting and validation processes, and ensuring adherence to Federal and statesafety and compliance regulations.The successful person will lead initiatives and strategies for improving vehicle quality and systems integration. He or she will have responsibility for Engineering, CAD, Configurator and PLM managers in defining design guidelines, standards and processes and ensuring adherence across engineering. This position reports to the VP of Engineering and is responsible for leading a team of 6 director reports and 25-30 indirect reports.

  •  Collaborates with Program Management, Sales and Production on vehicle concepts, NPI, project scope, timelines and resource requirements
  • Develop and document vehicle level architecture
  • Responsible for overall vehicle DVP&R
  • Leads the project team responsible for identifying, selecting and successfully implementing new PLM & CAD systems
  • Approve vehicle level designs in partnership with VP
  • Develop and execute testing and validation process of the vehicle and systems
  • Ensures BOM structure supports sales, engineering and production processes, ensures a quality product and aligns with PLM system implementation
  • Responsible for leading Bill of Materials and Order Processing functions
  • Works with Program Management in developing the strategies, plan of action, and priorities for the vehicle group
  • Key contributor to the product road mapping and the development of engineering processes
  • Lead and mentor the Vehicle group which includes providing technical and leadership training and guidance for managers, supervisors and the engineering team
  • Create an atmosphere of innovation and drive design excellence while assuring maximum product safety, manufacturability and cost effectiveness
  • Provide regular status updates to VP and/or executive office on design, integration, test and validation results of the vehicle
  • Ensures vehicle designs meet all applicable federal and state regulations and safety guidelines
  • Develop key relationships with both internal teams and external suppliers, using creativity and teamwork to solve problems in the most efficient way possible
  • Oversees hiring, training, performance management, and provides leadership and coaching to ensure well-trained, motivated and goal-oriented workforce
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders the impact of industry and technology change and the potential effects on engineering. Recommend solutions without compromising quality or service while optimizing cost

 

Qualifications/Educational Requirements (About you)

 

  •  Strong leadership skills and the ability to influence others within an interdisciplinary environment
  • Demonstrated increasing levels of technical and leadership responsibility in automotive, on/off highway or transportation equipment
  • Demonstrated design/leadership experience in ICE and electrified powertrains, collision avoidance systems, connected and autonomous vehicle technology, infotainment, electronic/electrical component/system root cause analysis, chassis/body structures, steering/suspension systems, air brake systems, vehicle dynamics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FMVSS, ADA, APTA Bus Procurement Guidelines, SAE HD vehicle standards, NFPA, NEC
  • BSEE, BSME or equivalent required, MSEE, MSME or equivalent preferred
  • Solid analytical skills and solution-driven thinking: collects and researches data; uses intuition and experience to complement data. Makes good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment
  • Demonstrated experience leading an engineering function with a proven track record in strategic engineering leadership delivering effective engineering strategies, policies, processes and systems
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects in a matrixed, fast paced, high growth and changing environment
  • Able to carry out and coordinate a cross-functional design review at an advanced level and in a wide range of work situations without guidance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of system/vehicle level testing and validation
  • Demonstrated experience establishing vehicle level safety and performance standards, validation and compliance testing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CAD/PLM/Configurator systems, implementation experience a plus
  • 15+ years of progressive engineering experience
  • 10+ years of management experience.
