Position Summary: The Director of Purchasing manages a team of customer service representatives serving purchasers in VCA Animal Hospitals and their field management teams. The Director of Purchasing is involved in new hospital onboarding and training; ensuring the provision of supplies and equipment to the hospitals; major equipment purchase approvals; contract review and management and the support of allied departments.

Essential Functions

  • Managing the Purchasing Customer Service Team, which supports hospital purchasers and managers, field team and executives
  • Onboarding of new hospital acquisitions and its purchasers by registering new acquisitions with partners/suppliers and setting up online procurement system with account information and providing purchasing information and training to hospital purchasers at the time of acquisition
  • Communicating purchasing updates through email, company website and internal company social media
  • Approving major equipment purchase requests, verifying sourcing, pricing and manager approval. Scope of approvals include Digital Radiography Systems, CT Scanners, MRIs, linear accelerators, C-Arms, lasers, endoscopic equipment, etc.
  • Providing Process Support and Training in the use of OrderRight (Coupa software) and Inventory management
  • Ensuring our hospitals have all the supplies and equipment required to provide great care
  • Interdepartmentalsupport, examples of which are below:
    • Procurement - product review and secure all necessary approvals prior to placement on procurement site
    • Accounting - assist in GL classification and mapping of purchased goods. Approval of new supplier credit applications
    • Acquisitions - coordinate onboarding of new hospitals’ purchasing activities to ensure seamless transition in material purchasing to ensure continuity of patient care through transition period
    • Management of leases, contracts and service agreements - implementation agreements in consultation with business development, general counsel, accounts payable and procurement. Approval of service and maintenance agreement renewals for medical and hospital equipment
    • Process improvement evaluation and improvement. Training on available products, equipment, services and processes
    • Supplier and partner communications - assurance of supply, ensure items in the catalog are set at contracted price, monitoring for back order trends and management of product recalls

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in the purchase, support and maintenance of medical equipment including radiology, MRI, CT, radiation oncology and ultrasound
  • Hospital/Industry experience – industry knowledge, understanding of medications, knowledge of veterinary procedures and imaging, knowledge of cages, grooming equipment, washers and driers.
  • Experience identifying promising new products
  • Experience working with service ticketing system
  • Experience managing a customer care team
  • Experience using IT solutions to solve procurement and purchasing challenges

Qualifications (Education & Experience) /Personal attributes

  • 10 years’ experience in related Veterinary or Human Health Care field
  • Education level – Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Certification and/or Project Managementexperience
  • Record of accomplishment in executing projects and developing systems
