The Director of Nursing has accountability for the clinical staff in all offices throughout the Health System. Responsibilities includes providing leadership, planning, program development and implementation, management/administrative functions and clinical development of adolescent, adult and geriatric skill sets for all clinical staff. The Director of Nursing is responsible for population health, oversight of Maryland Primary Care Program (MDPCP) model, quality initiatives with third party payers and deployment of clinical care models to support these goals. Data collection, monitoring and analysis to develop initiatives to improve quality outcomes and patient experience are key responsibilities.


  • Establishes, implements, and evaluates a strategic plan for the department that takes into account internal and external factors. Effectively communicates the plan throughout the organization.
  • Creates data priorities and report formats that display critical outcome factors.
  • Establishes processes and policies that adhere to Joint Commission standards as well as CMS Conditions of Participation and other regulations. Collaborates with Compliance to ensure developed processes and policies meet compliance standards in partnership with AGH.

  • Directs utilization review activities for the hospital, interfacing with external payers and review companies to determine appropriate medical necessity of admission and continued hospitalization.
  • Creates a system for initial and ongoing education and development of staff. Establishes role descriptions and performance criteria for staff meetings.
  • Develops structures and processes to facilitate participation by physicians, pharmacists, nurses, Social Workers and other health professionals in multidisciplinary care planning, care delivery, and treatment plans.
  • On an annual basis, develops measurable, reasonable and market oriented goals for the department that reflects those of the sponsoring organization.
  • Identifies improvement opportunities within the department and at the system level and creates strategies to address them.
  • Responsible for the management and the strategic growth of the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Oversees the day-to-day clinical management of outpatient clinics.
  • Continuously assesses current clinical flows, processes and procedures, identifies areas of improvement, and develops and implements best practices and appropriate changes to improve clinical outcomes.
  • Facilitates the flow of information and maximizes effective communication throughout the program.
  • Prioritizes responsibilities and directs the work of the health system’s clinical staff and non-clinical staff.
  • Collaborates with other health care providers and Vice President, Medical Affairs/Medical Directors regarding clinical and patient needs.
  • Reviews key financialreports, identifies key indicator trends and develops plans to implement best practices to ensure fiscal responsibility in the clinical services.
  • Manages costs through appropriate utilization and management of labor and supply.
  • Works directly with the hospital to ensure established strategic marketing plans and works with the same group and the health system services liaison to plan, coordinate, and execute activities directed toward increasing patient referrals to the clinics.
  • Works collaboratively, as part of a multi-functional team, to best determine key target referral sources, and develops a systematic approach to build those customer relationships and increase referrals.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with the health system’s Vice President.
  • Implements and manages a continuous Performance Improvement Program (PIP) and strives to meet MIPS, MACR, MDPCP quality indicators.
  • Is responsible for coordinating the clinical activities and directing the work of the clinical staff. This includes patient care assessment, patient care planning and implementation, and working on patient care quality improvement.
  • Maintains excellent relationship with hospital and continuously seeks to understand needs, confirm goal alignment and demonstrate value proposition. Identifies the hospital/health system’s strategic goals and objectives and manages the program to achieve those goals. Works effectively and seamlessly at all levels.
  • Builds and develops effective working relationships with clinical and support staff. Encourages all clinical staff to provide excellent customer service to all associates of the health system and hospital departments.


  • BSN, Master’s degreepreferred
  • Minimum of three years’ progressive experience in a management or administrative position required; five or more years preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a clinical nurse role, with office practice or case management experiencepreferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Willing to drive between clinic sites as needed.
