Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:  Under general direction of the ED Physician Service Central Medical Director and Chief Nurse Executive, the Emergency Services Service Line Director is responsible for the overall direction and performance of the integrated service line including the Emergency Department, Trauma Program, and Fast Track (ED) Services.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Fosters an open communication with staff and encourage the expression of ideas and opinions, listen well, prepare and deliver clear presentations, convey information clearly and effectively through both formal and informal conversation and documents. In addition, promote and enhance collaborative/caring relationships with colleagues and provide a caring working environment.

Promotes innovation, creativity, development and implementation of programs and solutions.  Effectively communicates strategic initiatives and involves others in planning and decision-making.  Collaborates with other leaders in the organization to create a seamless approach to patient care.

Creates an environment of continuous improvement.  Encourage strong nursing morale by promoting personal investment and excellence. Builds effective teams committed to organizational goals, fosters collaboration, and encourages as well as empowers others to achieve.  Accurately assesses the strengths and developmental needs of staff and provides timely, constructive feedback that contributes to and promotes staff development. 

Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to assigned staff.  Develops goals and priorities in conjunction with employees, and assigns tasks and projects.  Develops staff skills and training plans.  Counsels, trains, and coaches subordinate staff.  Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations.

Maintains a safe work environment by ensuring staff adheres to all JCAHO, Title 22, hospital, departmental policies and procedures and other regulatory requirements.  Ensures staff is competent and performing within the appropriate scope of practice.  Ensures equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.

Works with the physician and nursing leadership team to plan, organize and lead in the delivery of patient care and quality outcomes.  Ensures policies, procedures, standards of care and standards of practice are consistent with current nursing research and practice.

Efficiently manages staffing and scheduling, maintaining adequate staffing for patient acuity, budget, and census.  Monitors staffing costs per unit of services on a daily basis and works with clinical coordinators and charge nurses to manage within budget.  Develop and implement an annual operating and capital budget and maintain responsibility for the P & L.

Required Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A bachelor’s degree required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Supervisory - Seven (7) years professional work experience in an Emergency Service leadership role.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska.
Current Basic Life Support card required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A Master’s degree in business or nursing preferred.

Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.

May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
