The Director of Intercultural Life fosters a campus-wide climate of respect and is responsible for working with the office professional staff and student staff for the continued implementation of comprehensive student life programs and services on diversity, student leadership development, cross-cultural programming, cultural sensitivity, and current Higher Ed. topics. This role focuses on campus programming targeted to increase awareness and understanding of topics related to race, inclusion, diversity, and equity. The Director will supervise three professional staff and will be a key contributor of the Division of Student Life.
The Intercultural Life office advocates for the promotion of a diverse and nondiscriminatory campus community, while preparing students for pursuit of lifelong learning. The office reflects the changing paradigms of the growth of many U.S. cultures reflected by currently enrolled students of color and the needs of a diverse intercultural community. The office is open to assist all students regardless of race, gender, color, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and national or ethnic origin. However, the office has a unique role with regard to enhancing the overall quality of life for students of color on campus by focusing on retention, programming, leadership development, training and education.
- Essential Job Functions - ResponsibilitiesDevelop and implement programming that reflects the community’s needs in collaboration with the Division of Student Life
- departments, student organizations, non-academic, and academic departments, including the office’s annual retreat.
- Lead short-term long-term strategic planning for the office, including routine assessment of operations, activities, and
- partnerships, to help make data driven decisions.
- Maintain and increase the persistence of students of color at Carleton through interdepartmental collaboration and offering
- programs and services specifically designed to help students adjust and thrive at the College.
- Support community and campus involvement with the Community, Equity, Diversity Initiative (CEDI), ACM Minority
- Concerns Committee and Multicultural Alumni Network (MCAN).
- Represent the Division of Student Life and Carleton College at key events, as needed, including, but not limited to:
- student and alumni events, community outreach efforts recruitment events, and regional/national association.
- Manage and maximize the office’s fiscal resources to achieve its mission and goals.
- Be part of the Central Staff On-Call .
- Required QualificationsM.A. required and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in Higher Education.
- Previous experience with managing financial resources effectively and efficiently.
- Experience with creating and leading programming to support students of color and cultivate community.
- Previous experience managing professional staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
- High interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Understanding of student development and college adjustment for students of color.
- Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, databases, the Internet and web based applications.
