Position Summary Newborn Essential Solutions and Technologies (NEST360°) is a Rice 360° Institute led multi-country, multi-disciplinary initiative dedicated to halving neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. NEST360° will optimize, deploy and scale rugged and affordable technologies for comprehensive newborn care; train current and future clinic staff on the use and maintenance of these tools, and educate the next generation of innovators; provide new tools and evidence to facilitate widespread adoption of NEST; and shape a functional market for newborn technologies.

The Director of Human Factors is responsible for supervising the clinical evaluation and optimization of all inventions/design outputs from the Rice 360° Institute, especially those within the NEST360° initiative. S/he communicates the results of scientific research through presentations. The Director co-supervises undergraduates / graduate student researchers and Rice 360° Global Health Fellow researchers and maintains a safe and efficient work environment.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with designing healthcare technologies for use in resource constrained environments and experienced in leading the process of evaluating and refining laboratory prototype designs, especially within a clinical/hospital setting.

Education Required PhD or other Doctoral Degree Major/Discipline In either of the following:

Psychology or other relevant field of social sciences; biomedical, mechanical, electrical or other relevant field of engineering.

Substitution for Education Requirement May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.

Education Preferred Concentration in human factors, usability or other relevant sub-specialty.

Experience Required 3 years Type of Experience Related experience in any of the following areas:

- product development, especially as it relates to human factors and usability

- working in a design lab, especially as it relates to human factors and usability

- clinical and/or engineering research

Substitution for Experience Requirement Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement.

Experience Preferred - Experience with medical device development and design

- Experience with design within resource constrained environments

- Experience with grant writing

- Rice University work experience or experience in any higher education environment.

License/Certification Required License/Certification Preferred Skills Required - Proficient and comprehensive knowledge of information management, knowledge management and publication management

- Possess a logical and independent mind

- Good interpersonal skills such as patience, determination, flexibility, and decisiveness

- Excellent listening, verbal and written communication, analytical, and research skills

- Excellent scientific and numerical skills with meticulous attention to details and accuracy

Skills Preferred - Prior experience with grant writing

- Advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email and database software programs to complete work assignments

- Problem solving and critical thinking

- Ability to work independently, owning responsibility for timely completion of work

- Ability to multi-task and use good judgement to manage multiple and sometimes competing deadlines

- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with people from many different backgrounds and experiences
