Job Description:

Description of Department: Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is responsible for providing campus-wide compliance with federal, state and local environmental, safety and fire regulations. Environmental Health & Safety staff provide guidance, training and support to all campus departments as needed. As a cohesive unit the department constantly strives to increase the environmental stewardship and safety awareness of all who thrive within the campus community.

The Environmental, Health and Safety Department at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time Director of Environmental Health and Safety.

Description of Responsibilities:

The Director of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for the development, coordination and administration of all aspects of the campus worker safety and environmental management systems including hazardous materials management, occupational health and safety, fire prevention and protection, and state and federal code and regulatory compliance programs. The Director designs, develops, updates and implements a variety of safety and health programs in compliance with State and Federal regulations and the University's needs such as Hazard Communication {Right to Know), Bloodborne Pathogens, Asbestos Abatement, Universal Waste, Laboratory Safety, Personal Protective Equipment, Hearing Conservation, Confined Space Entry, Pollution Prevention and Environmental Stewardship. Will be proactive in supporting the campus community on all aspects of safety issues and providing assistance to a wide range of campus audiences including faculty, professional and classified staff on issues relating to occupational safety, chemical hygiene, waste disposal, emergency spill response, and building and fire codes.

The Director maintains all applicable DEC, EPA, DOL and PESH record keeping and training documentation and reports and conducts periodic review and revision of all written safety and environmental policies, emergency response plans and programs. Coordinates all regulatory agency site visits, audits, inspections, and follow-up activities and manages all elements of the EHS budget. Supervises assigned professional and classified staff.

In addition, will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.


Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Health or related field at time of application
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in the safety and environmental health field
  • Strong working knowledge and training in applicable environmental and occupational health and safety laws and regulations and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and climb ladders
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in science, safety, or a related field
  • 5-7 years' experience in the safety and environmental health field
  • Certified: Industrial Hygienist, Safety Professional, or Hazardous Materials Manager.
