The Director of Engineering is responsible for planning and directing all aspects of engineering within ModusLink Distribution & Fulfillment Operations in the US. As a member of the BU Senior Leadership team, the Director provides dynamic leadership, creating vision, and strategic leadership in the improvement and automation of processes, support of client services, and programs development. The Director is also responsible for the alignment of Engineering initiatives of the Distribution and Fulfillment Operations US with all other Global Business Units.

Role you will play:

?        Direct daily operations of department, analyzing workflow, establishing priorities, developing standards and setting deadlines. Manage to functional area budget and assume fiscal responsibility for Engineering requests.

?        Responsible for identifying facility design requirements, personnel requirements, and writing work instructions and standard operating procedures, that will improve efficiency, capacity & throughput.

?        Develop training plans and train local distribution center employees using process work instructions; coordinate safety, environmental, equipment, and process training requirements with HR, Compliance, and Safety Manager.

?        Convert contract documents, proposals, and statements of work into work instructions and operating procedures; submit ISO compliant work instruction and standard operating procedure documents to Quality Management System.

?        Determine packaging/kitting requirements based on method of transportation and product dimensional profile; specify and document packaging methods; specify and purchase packaging equipment, containers/cartons, and packing (void fill) to support cartonization functionality and product dimensional profile; identify outbound labeling/documentation requirements.

?        Optimize warehouse and distribution center layouts, analyze throughput capacities and resolve bottlenecks using process modeling.

?        Resolves warehouse and logistics problems when they occur and advocates solutions to prevent recurrence.

?        Evaluate alternate and emerging warehouse technologies to reduce total cost-to-serve and provide optimal operational flexibility.

?        Maintain relationships with key automation vendors.

?        Provide strategic direction in all facets of distribution center automation, material handling equipment, software, building design, etc. coupled with an intimate knowledge of the supplier base.

?        Analyze and provide solutions for cost reduction through process improvements and cost/benefit analysis.

?        Utilize labor data to cost justify capital expenditure and process change ROI.

?        Delivers results by driving strategic and operational direction through effective planning, organizing, prioritizing staff assignments, and continual analysis.

?        Manages capital assets and projects/budgets and ROI for each projects, leading presentations to key stakeholders to keep them informed of status of initiatives and projects, performance against planned objectives, and future strategic directions with associated impact on expenses.

?        Drive Logistics innovation process focusing on Automation and Operational Modernization Initiatives:

o  Facilitate sharing of technologies, systems and best practices within the Business Unit and Company

o  Encourage and contribute to the development and integration of new technologies and systems within the Business Unit and Company

o  Promote the education and awareness of new and emerging technologies

?        Responsible for fostering internal and external relationships with diverse audiences to ensure the Engineering Department successfully delivers system solutions with a focus on technical problem solving by using applied research, and advanced engineering in the creation of new capabilities, programs and processes.

?        Support the Global Sales Organization by contributing to solutions designs and on boarding programs.

?        Collaborate with the Business Unit Senior Leadership Team with BU?s strategic planning and execution.

Background Profile


  • Bachelor?s Degree in Industrial Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in distribution center engineering and project management, in an upper management or senior leadership role.
  • Progressive responsibilities in engineering and operations within a distribution environment.
  • Solid negotiating and contracting skills; includes sound understanding of market costs.
  • Strong, functional knowledge of automation, quality management and Lean practices.
  • Strong analytical, financial and P&L skills required to succeed.
  • In-depth knowledge of key distribution operations processes and current best practices.
  • Strong analytical skills including familiarity with ERP systems and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect globally and positively influence leadership and all levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Expertise in AutoDesk CAD, MS Office Suite, MSSharepoint/Project.
  • Ability to respond positively and productively to change and handle other tasks as required.
