McLean Hospital, a preeminent provider of psychiatric care, innovative research, professional training, and public education, seeks a Director of Development to serve as a key member of its executive fundraising team charged with raising $15-16 million in annual philanthropic support. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced manager and front-line fundraiser to strengthen the hospital's major gifts program in preparation for a comprehensive campaign to modernize facilities and expand access to services.
McLean has been meeting the needs of individuals and families with psychiatric illness since its founding in 1811. The largest psychiatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, it numbers more than 1,900 employees who support the delivery of an array of specialized academic and clinical programs to people of all ages – children, teens, young adults, and older adults. Centers of Excellence at McLean include Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Women's Mental Health, Depression and Anxiety and Disorders, Substance Use Disorders, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Psychotic Disorders.
Reporting to the Vice President of Philanthropy/Chief Development Officer, the Director of Development provides strategic oversight of the front-line fundraising program, directing a staff of 5+ in the areas of major gifts, planned giving, foundation relations, and related stewardship and communications, while also managing a small prospect/donor portfolio. The Director partners with the CDO in building the donor pipeline and strengthening a culture of philanthropy in support of the hospital's next comprehensive capital campaign.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished fundraising manager with progressively increasing achievement in major gifts and campaign fundraising; an engaging, entrepreneurial, and highly motivated relationship-manager with superb communications, negotiating, and organizational skills, high integrity and professional judgement; and shows enthusiasm and initiative in working effectively with the CDO and philanthropy team members, volunteer leaders, senior administrators, clinicians and researchers, and sophisticated and affluent donors.
