The Director, Business Systems provides strategic and operational leadership in delivering and supporting key business applications across the UC San Diego Health enterprise. As a leader of the enterprise business applications initiatives, this position has the overall accountability for the strategy, operations, acquisition, contracting, system upgrades, project deliveries, optimization efforts, analytics/reporting, vendor management, and ongoing application support for UC San Diego Health business systems.

The Director facilitates inter-disciplinary governance in order to ensure that resources and projects are tightly aligned with business operational and strategic priorities. Responsible for ensuring that key business data derived from these systems are reliable, consistent, accurate, complete and available for analytics. This role also leads the ongoing evaluation of new business systems and capabilities that may be acquired or developed in order to support the enterprise in achieving key business objectives, and oversees contractual agreements related to these systems.

The Director is responsible for oversight of project management including selection, planning, design, implementation, end-user support, and maintenance of assigned systems including Financial Systems Support, Time and Attendance, SAP Support, interface engine. Ensures effective methods, procedures, and techniques for monitoring, controlling and maintaining the integrity of enterprise systems data. Manages assigned personnel including subordinate managers. Financial oversight of assigned area.

Key Responsibilities:
Leads the development of system integration strategies by understanding the external trends, institutional strategy and community needs. Implements strategic policies when selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Provides technical advice and/or oversight to staff related to areas of assignment; evaluates information concerning needs and strategic goals related to system integration, estimating and coordinating program/ unit activities and associated costs, and tactical project execution activities.

Oversees completion of complex assignments requiring working knowledge of key business principles and practices. Establishes and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans and performance requirements. Oversees directly or through subordinate managers the analysis of the needs of functional departments, and helps to establish priorities for feasibility studies and systems design and implementation to develop new and/ or modify information processing systems. Coordinates with functional departments involved in system requirements, techniques, and controls.

Recommends and implements tactical procedures to improve operational effectiveness and enhancements to services or programs. May be called upon to initiate change, by modifying and altering existing procedures and methods. Provides guidance and direction for achievement of objectives (operational and budgetprocesses, staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning). Manages the activities of Information Systems staff directly or through subordinate managers, having overall responsibility for functional programs. Effectively builds relationship with key leaders and others essential to organizational objectives. Advises senior management on sensitive situations, customer negotiations, or influencing and persuading other senior level managers.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Eight (8+) or more years of relevant experience and proven success, in-depth knowledge of Information Technology principles, theories, and concepts to manage functional area(s) and provide solutions.

  • Three (3+) or more years progressive managerial experience in an Information technology organization.


  • Advanceddegreein related field.
    • Ten (10) or more years of experience managing an Information technology organization.
    • Substantial IS experience in a large, complex health care organization.
    • Significant design and implementation experience within Oracle financial management application.
    • Significant professional experience with time and attendance, Informatica, SQL.
