Position Description

The Director of Business Intelligence and Marketing Analysis (BIMA) reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and manages one Business Intelligence Analyst. The Director of BIMA is responsible for providing actionable intelligence and insightful, evidence-based analysis that supports key business decisions and improves RAND's competitive position. This position is located at RAND’s Santa Monica Headquarters.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist senior leadership identify key intelligence topics for further exploration
  • Develop action plans and analytical approaches for addressing key intelligence topics
  • Develop metrics and information about RAND's performance, clients, and competitors
  • Manage collections of secondary and primary data for use in business intelligence analysis
  • Mine internal data for relevant correlations and opportunities to improve competitiveness
  • Manage and perform competitive intelligence analysis
  • Provide objective perspectives on competitors and internal business operations
  • Provide insight into trends, tactics, and operations of competitors
  • Draft concise, actionable intelligence reports


  • Ability to translate complex analysis and topics into digestible oral and written communications
  • Knowledge of competitive intelligence processes
  • Proven experience in understanding critical factors, asking the right questions, and uncovering key issues and drivers
  • Ability to build strong relationships
  • Strategic thinking and problem solving ability
  • Strong intellectual and business acumen
  • Excellent collaboration skills
  • Strong understanding of financial results
  • Excellent prioritization, multitasking, and project management skills
  • Strong knowledge and experience working with unit management, and corporate financial management (products, processes, and systems)
  • Research environment experience desirable
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, and PowerPoint with exposure to social media applications are needed

Education Requirements


BS/BA in marketing, economics, or technical area (engineering, etc) or related business experience

Masters preferred



9 years of experience in strategy, market or competitive intelligence

3 years of supervisory experience
