Job Functions

As Director of Business Development, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties. Responsible for managing the facilities occupancy and financial viability by opening and maintaining accounts with insurers, community organizations and hospitals, which generate patient referrals and admissions. This is a non-supervisory position. This job description does not list all the duties of the job. You may be asked by the supervisors or managers to perform other duties. Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Will require multi-facility system access.
  2. Achieves facility census goals and annual budget projections.
  3. Acts as liaison between the company and the outside community.
  4. Works with local community agencies to generate a positive image and encourage referral activities.
  5. Participates in industry trade shows and business development activities, as assigned.
  6. Develops strategies to maximize admissions including daily contact with potential referral sources including but not limited to hospitals, physicians, insurers, case management companies and health care agencies.
  7. Conducts admission screening of potential patients, determine level of care, services required, equipment needs and insurance coverage, as indicated.
  8. Promotes the company and participates in contract closings and price negotiations with insurance companies, as assigned.
  9. Maintains knowledge of current regulations governing Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance company reimbursement.
  10. Collects appropriate data, prepares and submits required reports to Regional Director of Admissions as assigned with copies of reports to Executive Director.
  11. Maintains effective communication with company personnel, as assigned.
  12. Attends and participates in weekly admissions/operations meetings, as assigned by Regional Director of Admissions.
  13. Participates in the facility quality improvement process by identifying customer service issues and reporting these issues to the Executive Director.
  14. Accesses continuing education opportunities appropriate to discipline and responsibilities as approved by the Regional Director of Admissions.
  15. Adheres to all company Policies and Procedures, and participates in safety, quality improvement and infection control programs as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Works in office area(s) as well as throughout the nursing service area (i.e., drug rooms, nurses' stations, resident rooms, etc.).
  • Moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
  • Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department directors.
  • Works beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
  • Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
  • Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
  • Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
  • Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Maintains a liaison with the residents, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the residents' needs.
  • Works in well –lighted, ventilated areas.
  • Is subject to frustrations in keeping up with work demands.
  • Deals with public, residents and personnel under varying conditions.

Education

  • Secondary Education Degree required. Nursing degree preferred. Current state license, as appropriate.

Experience

  • Three (3) years experience in business development. Managed care/insurance preferred.
  • Experience with public and commercial payers sources preferred.
  • Experience working independently.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Regional Director of Business Development experience a MUST.

  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care facilities.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident's condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of the company, which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • Excellent hearing and verbal skills required for facilitation, relations and liaison activities.
  • Excellent visual skills required for patient assessment, documentation and outcomes analysis.
  • Manual dexterity required for documentation and data entry.
  • Physical ability to visit site(s), and capability to negotiate complex physical plants.
  • Requires intense concentration and attention.
  • Ability to cope with stress associated with changing census and workload pressures.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and time-manage effectively for self and others.
