The Director of Attorney Career Services will receive a generous total compensation package. Bonuses are awarded in recognition of individual and firm performance. As a Director of Attorney Career Services at Latham, you will be responsible for overseeing the firm’s attorney career services strategy and operations. The Director will work with firm attorneys, as well as with colleagues in Attorney Development and other departments, including Human Resources and Business Development, to provide career counseling and support for firm associates. The Director of Attorney Career Services will also serve as a resource to associates looking for new career opportunities. The Director of Attorney Career Services will promote the career services function among partners and other colleagues, and encourage the referral of career opportunities at firm clients and other organizations. The Director will serve as a source of referrals for a variety of internal and external resources that are available to firm associates, including coaching services and other support, while accomplishing these and other critical functions:

  • Collaborating with colleagues across the firm to develop and execute on the firm’s strategy for associate career support. Identifying opportunities to refine existing practice and identifying new areas and processes that can help enhance the firm’s associate coaching and career services function.
  • Serving as a key resource for associates seeking career guidance, including new career opportunities, including by identifying internal and external resources, providing coaching, interview training, and other support. Collaborating with colleagues in Attorney Development and other departments so that these colleagues can also serve as resources for associates seeking career guidance, ensuring a consistent and strategic approach while maintaining independence and confidentiality.
  • Working with the Directors of Attorney Development, the Director of Global Attorney Diversity and Training, and the Director of Staff Professional Development and Diversity, to promote and advise on, external and internal coaching. Encouraging the development of attorney coaching programs across the firm, engaging internal resources in the Attorney Development and Human Resources departments as well as external resources. Advising on situations when an external resource should be engaged to support the specific needs of an individual associate. Working with external resources to ensure the assistance they are providing is consistent with the firm's culture.
  • Functioning as an independent, trusted advisor for associates seeking career guidance and support.
  • Promoting and encouraging the career services function, educating partners, counsel, associates, and professional staff about the function and its importance to the firm’s business development, recruiting and retention goals.
  • Encouraging and fostering a culture whereby colleagues regularly communicate with external contacts, at clients and other organizations, to identify career opportunities for firm attorneys. Setting and implementing effective communication strategies to ensure that associates and other colleagues are aware of both external and internal career opportunities.
  • Working with the Global Manager of Alumni Relations to identify external career opportunities, make them known to associates, and assist associates in pursuing such opportunities.
  • Coordinating with other areas/departments of the firm where functional overlap exists to develop efficient procedures/communications to streamline processes and satisfy various department needs.
  • Promoting effective work practices and working as a team member.

A Bachelor’s degree is required. An MBA, JD or Master’s Degree, as well as coaching certification, are strongly preferred.

Seven (7) years progressively responsible career services or similar experience is desired. Five (5) years of management experience or equivalent in a related field is also desired. Experience with developing, implementing and administering career services and/or career development and coaching programs is preferred.
