STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Director of Advising provides senior-level vision, leadership, and administrative direction to the college's retention efforts through advising and support services. The Director leads staff responsible for academic, career, and transfer advising efforts, along with disability services focused on student success. The Director works collaboratively with the Directors of Student and Family Engagement, Multicultural Student Center, and Women's Center on achieving the College's retention goals. As such, the Director works collaboratively across the entire college to ensure the practice of shared governance and transparency, while helping to move the college towards comprehensive, innovative solutions to empower and meet the evolving needs of the Bristol community

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Dean of Retention.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Oversees department and area staff as assigned by the Dean of Retention and/or the Vice President for Student Services and Enrollment Management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative

  • Provide strategic vision and strategies for Advising; aligning departmental goals with institutional strategic plans.
  • Provide overall vision, administration, and execution of the College's proactive advising model through a comprehensive Advising department consisting of academic, career, and transfer advising along with disability services.
  • Ensure student records and departmental practices are in compliance with local and federal policies and guidelines.
  • Assist in developing and unifying the College's retention efforts.
  • Plan and implement regular and ongoing proactive advising training initiatives for Faculty Advisors and full and part-time professional staff.
  • Establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures while monitoring and evaluating operational effectiveness and influencing changes required for continuous improvement.
  • Provide timely reports and analysis to college leadership, including the Dean of Retention, the President's Leadership Team, Student Services and Enrollment Management Vice President's Counsel (VPC), Academic Affairs VPC, and Institutional Research.
  • Maintain an active advising caseload of students as prescribed by the Dean of Retention.
  • Recruit and hire new employees.
  • Oversee advising on all campus locations.

Leadership/Management

  • Supervise, lead, and develop all Advising department staff including academic advisors, administrative staff, and student staff. Conduct regular performance evaluations to ensure continuous improvement and identify potential opportunities for growth. Work closely with Human Resources to create talent development plans and implement appropriate performance improvement plans.
  • Oversee academic intervention initiatives such as the Connections program, Early Alert, Academic Review, Academic Probation, and Academic Dismissal.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive work environment that supports the professional growth of staff while fostering a commitment to excellence.
  • Work collaboratively with college leadership to recommend and implement tactics that ensure achievement of prescribed retention goals, including fall-to-fall retention rate.
  • Prepare and monitor annual budgets for all departmental programs and activities.
  • Communicate information to staff via multiple platforms; conduct weekly staff meetings.
  • Implement technological resources that scale, amplify, and measure department program and service efforts, in partnership with Information Technology and Marketing & Communications.
  • Serve on various leadership councils for Student Services and Enrollment Management.
  • Actively engage with professional organizations (e.g. NACADA, NASPA) to stay current on professional development, higher education trends, and best practices.
  • Lead and serve on various college committees, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Retention or the Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management.


Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in higher education or related field and experience in a higher education environment that demonstrates:

  • Progressive leadership and administrative experience, with at least five years in a Student Affairs or Enrollment Management area, such as Advising, First-Year Programs, and/or Admissions.
  • Progressive supervision and management experience, with at least three years supervising professional staff members.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and practice to improve student retention.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills; as well as the ability to be adaptable and flexible.
  • Evidence of professional development and life-long learning.
  • Demonstrated use of Microsoft Office programs to manage communication, presentations, and record-keeping.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstration of student development and event planning.
  • Successful history of collaboration with others across divisions to build effective relationships, particularly with the Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Affairs, and Information Technology areas.
  • Experience using technology in the advising process, academic pathways, and student retention services.
  • Ability to strategically manage and grow department human and capital resources.
  • Commitment to the community college mission and serving the needs of first-generation and traditionally underserved populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of shared governance and transparency.
  • A commitment to embracing diversity and serving the needs of a diverse population, including the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate in higher education or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with Redrock, Degree Works, Starfish, Ellucian Banner, EMS, and other related software packages.
  • Demonstrated expertise and commitment related to assessment and continuous improvement of enrollment and/or student services operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and use predictive modeling and data-analytics to enhance retention initiatives.
  • Comprehensive, multi-campus community college experience.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
