Texas Health Resources seeks to hire a Director Media Relations and Issue Management. This position oversees the development and implementation of proactive media relations strategies for the enterprise. Develops the media/communications training annually for organization leaders. Develops and maintains relationships with media through regular interaction and proactive positioning work. Leads response to media inquiries, working to align talking points and statements with VP Stakeholder Engagement, legal, compliance, executive leaders and subject matter experts as needed. Routinely interacts with and prepares media responses for leaders, physicians and subject matter experts across the enterprise. Consults with and guides joint venture media relations, and actively manages issues on behalf of joint ventures that carry the Texas Health name.

PROACTIVE MEDIA RELATIONS
Develops and implements external communication and media relations strategies that translate complex concepts into simple, clear, meaningful messages for key stakeholders across a variety of messaging platforms and channels. Implements creative approaches that create interest, elicit response and ultimately translate into positive media coverage for Texas Health.
Leads development of media responses, talking points and positioning statements for Texas Health, that consider and incorporate the organizations key strategic themes and leverages strengths and investments. In this capacity routinely counsels subject matter experts, both clinical and non-clinical, including executives, physicians and program leaders. Provides training and coaching around proactive and reactive media responses for leaders, working closely with legal and compliance to ensure alignment. Creates trusting relationships with leaders and physicians that enable honest, candid feedback related to media responses.
Actively monitors local and national media, working to identify opportunities to proactively position Texas Health and listening for fair and accurate representation of its programs and services. Proactively shares insights around media coverage with leaders and stakeholders such that groups are informed and aware when Texas Health is in the news. This requires deep understanding of the organization's strategies and approaches, such the incumbent is able to identify opportunities for engagement and positioning. Works to develop approaches for sharing near real-time feedback about media coverage in a neutral and clear manner.
Oversees and directs Media Relations team to ensure message alignment, as well as tracking and monitoring of all media. Directs areas of focus for media relations team to produce best possible share of voice outcomes for the organization. Holds team accountable for meeting goals and communicating results.
Serve as emergency management and crisis communication liaison for all branded entities across enterprise, both wholly-owned and joint ventured. Leads media response development, working to evaluate and present likely scenarios to engagement in advance. Works closely with legal and compliance teams, to evaluate risk of response and developing approaches that mitigate risk. Researches, studies and presents best practices and case studies to guide response.
Gains insights from subject matter experts and provides appropriate counsel and guidance to same from a media perspective. Coaches and counsels individuals responsible for media response, ensuring they are as prepared as possible to represent the organization.
Monitors media consistently throughout emergency, issue or crises, and provides ongoing reports and perspectives related to sentiment to leaders related to coverage. Proposes potential approach and response, aligning with VP Stakeholder and subject-matter experts to development best possible outcomes.
PROGRAM AND CHANNEL DEVELOPMENT
Develops innovative programs and approaches for sharing messaging platform, content and outcomes. Includes visual translation of messaging strategy through the use of illustration, video, info-graphics and the like.
Looks for new approaches to gain visibility and awareness of the brand, products, programs and services that can be leveraged in multiple ways. Pilots programs to generate and interest in story content, working with Brand Experience team to generate results.
Creates new angles and strategies around key themes and strategic priorities.
Contributes to social media editorial calendar, looking for opportunities to position organization and directs team to do the same.
Helps builds and maintain effective relationships with local, regional and national media representatives, using new and emerging media, as well as creative and innovative approaches to proactively elevate Texas Health’s presence and reputation.
Develops deep understanding of potential media opportunities by working to stay current with evolving and emerging channels as opportunities.
Considers potential for relationship development with non-traditional media representatives (such as social media thought leaders and community leaders) and develops plans where appropriate.
Develops relationships with community leaders, joint venture partners and sponsor organizations, working to present relevant information consistently to external audiences, leveraging their channels, events and programs when possible to pull through organizational messaging.
Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications or related field required
Master's Degree Journalism, communications or related field preferred
8 years experience in media relations that demonstrates steady progression of responsibilities required.
** Health care experience, newsroom, and agency background experience preferred.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; strong editor, writer and storyteller. Proven ability to translate complex ideas into simple, clear, compelling messages for use internally and externally. Strong media relations skills with proven success in media relations, crisis communication and issues management. Strong interpersonal communication skills, the ability to work with all levels of staff (executive, front-line, trustees and physicians) and function effectively in a fast-paced environment. Expert relationship building skills with ability to provide poignant and direct feedback to leadership. Deep knowledge of health care industry, trends and business acumen. Passion for leveraging the dynamic, shifting landscape of health care to drive effective communication initiatives that engage and external stakeholders. Managerial experience with ability to coach and mentor staff. Staff management experience required. Results-oriented and exhibits strong attention to detail. Visionary and innovator, willing to take calculated risks to improve internal and external engagement. Must handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion. Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
