The Director, Instrumentation and Control Division reports directly to the Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors. The Instrumentation and Control Division is responsible for initiating, guiding, coordinating, and reviewing all technical as well as administrative work connected with the research, design, development, construction, testing, operation, and maintenance of electrical components and systems as well as electronic instrumentation and control components and systems associated with nuclear power plants in aircraft carriers, submarines, and prototypes.
Establishment of Program goals for reactor plant instrumentation and control equipment and systems and electric plant equipment and systems for all naval nuclear propulsion plants.
Convenes senior Navy officials and Department of Energy leadership outside the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program to develop plans and strategies critical to the success of Department of Energy and Department of the Navy programs in the area of electrical, instrumentation, control, and propulsion systems.
Directs all aspects of planning, development, evaluation, and effort of support personnel in establishing and managing new design submarine and aircraft carrier electrical, instrumentation, control, and propulsion system and component development programs. Brings together senior Program officials to establish design parameters and performance and reliability standards used by government contractors in the design, manufacture, and testing of new equipment under development. In coordination with overall organizational goals, translates such future requirements into proposals for new or revised component design and advanced development programs.
Serves as a recognized senior executive official in the design, development, operation, and maintenance of reactor plant instrumentation and control equipment and systems and electric plant equipment and systems for all naval nuclear propulsion plants.
Also, provides direction, guidance, leadership, and advice to ships, shipyards, and field offices when problems or questions arise relative to administered programs, systems, or equipment. Directs the technical liaison and support to the operating fleet and shipyards for the installation, operation, test and maintenance of the equipment and systems. Directs prime contractor and shipyard action to resolve emergent problems with this equipment in new construction and operational nuclear powered ship propulsion plants.
Provides overall direction and guidance on the Instrumentation and Control Division's approval of system and component design technical recommendations submitted by government prime contractors. Sets standards for correspondence to government prime contractors responding to their technical submittals.
Provides technical and administrative direction to engineers and clerical staff in the Instrumentation and Control Division.
Provides overall direction for the training of prospective commanding officers for nuclear powered ships and prototypes, including training sessions, written examinations, and oral examinations.
Ensures appropriate budgets are developed for reactor plant instrumentation and control systems and equipment and electric plant systems and equipment for nuclear powered ships and prototypes.
