As part of the Human Resources North America Leadership Team and the Defence & Security leadership team, the Director, Human Resources is responsible for partnering with the leadership team and contributing to the strategic direction of the organization as well as ensuring effective alignment of HR objectives and initiatives to business goals. This position also has responsibility for aspects of leadership development, team effectiveness and overall employee engagement. It creates the link between business operations and the Human Resources Team by acting as the HR Lead for the Defence & Security business Team. The position implements HR policy, programs and practices and drives company-wide programs and initiatives in the local business unit.

Provides assistance to the Director of Human Resources on various Projects as required.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Contribute to the leadership, growth and profitability of the business through effective development and delivery of the people strategy
  • Partner with the leadership team to explore the business vision identifying, leading and delivering key strategic HR imperatives supporting that deliver successful outcomes against long and short-term business objectives
  • Actively contribute to the performance of Thales Canada and globally by supporting the global and North American HR strategy and by ensuring the HR Shared Services and Centre of Excellence functions support the business strategy of the Defence & Security unit in Canada
  • Provide ongoing feedback and view to impact on the organization
  • Ensure that HR issues and consequences are considered at the earliest possible point of business decision making
  • Evaluate the external environment, business & people related trends to identify and act on opportunities & threats


  • Act as an advocate for the Thales Values at all times and ensure others act as role models within the HR function and management
  • Be a strong confidante and candid coach to the leadership team – proactively offering advice, counsel and thought partnership
  • Partner with the leadership team and facilitate team building to ensure strong working relationships
  • Work as part of an integrated and collaborative HR function that is focused on driving success and fulfil their role as an active member of the HR leadership team
  • Articulate the organizations value proposition
  • Evaluate the external environment, business & people related trends to identify and act on opportunities & threats
  • Foster an environment that leverages diversity, innovation and drives collaboration and results

Human Resources:

  • Accountable to ensure that the HR Shared Services and Centre of Excellence functions support the business strategy of the Defence & Security unit in Canada and build relationships with North American counterparts
  • Facilitate and program manage roll-out of COE programs – including employee engagement survey and action planning, performance management, compensation planning, rewards and recognition programs, talent development programs, etc.
  • Implement the talent strategy for the business ensuring succession planning and key talent identification
  • Demonstrate and apply a structured and measurable approach to managing change within the business
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations and corporate requirements and provides advice to the Management in this regard
  • Ensure all employment conditions, benefits; practices are in compliance with local legislation in all locations of operation
  • Responsible for Ethics compliance within the Defence & Security Business
  • Lead and support internal HR projects where required

Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Computer proficiency/ or minimum working knowledge is preferred for the following programs: MS Outlook, MS Office Suite, HRIS such as People Soft, SAP or Ultipro
  • Bachelor degree in Human Resources or other related field
  • 10-15 years Human Resources experience; minimum 7 years as a strategic HR Business Partner
  • Knowledge of relevant employment legislation, legal practices, and best practices
  • HRIS/ERP knowledge
  • Over 8 years of experience in problem solving and analysis
  • Previous experience in Defence environment preferred
  • CHRP/PHR/SPHR an asset
  • Must be able to develop credibility with all levels of management and teams and has the ability to influence
  • Strong understanding in employee relations, compensation, training and development
  • Strategic thinker and ability to anticipate long term needs
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with conviction, clearly and effectively
  • Ability to deal with conflict and difficult conversations
  • Ability to function and thrive in a fast paced, innovative environment, and exhibit excellent multitasking skills – project management skills
  • Ability to manage confidential information and act with integrity and discretion.
