Position Overview:

The Engineering Director, working with the Project General Managers for each project, will provide technical supervision, management review, performance evaluation and development programs for all engineering staff in the Major Projects Organization. The Engineering Director is responsible to ensure that the projects are properly staffed and the technical work is done to Motiva standards or industry recognized norms. From a technical perspective the Engineering Director works with the General Managers for the development and realization of the assets for major capital projects through start-up including assurance, risk management, quality, design, procurement, contracting, constructability, schedule and costs.

The Engineering Director demonstrates and provides leadership in the application of Motiva policies, the use of the Capital Project Management System, and Motiva engineering standards and procedures.


  • Support the development of a safety culture across all capital projects
  • Fulfill role as a Major Project Leadership Team Member
  • Advise the Major Project Vice President on impacts and mitigation measures for issues and changes on the delivery of the projects
  • Leads engineering discipline managers to ensure:
    • Development of deliverables through the proper application of standards, utilization of best practices and consider Lessons Learned
    • To ensure deliverables are developed to an appropriate level for the phase of the Projects
    • Engineering Execution Plans are developed that support objectives of the Projects
  • Provide technical assurance for conceptual design and detailed design on the projects
  • Ensures technical viability of the project deliverables and conforms to recognized industry norms
  • Supports the development of project technical and quality management deliverables through the project
  • Responsible for the overall quality assurance process for the entire Major Projects Organization and all associated projects
  • Leads development and monitoring of all engineering and contractor quality management plans
  • Supports all QA/QC Motiva and Contractor activities to ensure a final facility that is built to specifications, is reliable, and can be operated safely
  • Ensure that the technical staff have the requisite competencies to complete project technical deliverables and focus items for all Phases
  • Manage constructive relationships from a technical perspective with engineering contractors
  • Provide overview of the technical deliverables to support delivery of the project within budget and schedule
  • Ensures technical teams are aligned and working to support the project objectives
  • Ensure that technical assurance activities are executed on deliverables for each project phase
  • Lead project technical and quality assurance activities such as peer reviews
  • Lead project Organizational Capability (OC) from a technical staff perspective to deliver project results and enable technical people development to provide long term support to Major Projects and other Motiva organizations

Experience and Qualifications Required:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering (Prefer: Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil/Structural)
  • 20+ years of professional experience with chemical plants and refineries (Example roles: Discipline Department Manager, Engineering Manager, Project Manager)
  • 5+ years working for an Owner/Operator.
