Job Description

Position Summary:

The Director of Cost Accounting position plays an integral role in the Operations Finance leadership team within the Life Science Solutions group of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The role will provide Cost Accounting leadership for a team of site and division based cost accounting professionals. The Cost Accounting function works with operations finance as well as the general accounting team to drive costing oversight, compliance and supports the analytics for manufacturing finance. Director of Cost Accounting will contribute to the development and execution of the annual operating plan (AOP), cost roll and play an integral part in aligning operation team goals with division leadership expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and ensure consistent application of cost accounting principles across the North America manufacturing sites
  • Lead the strategic direction of the Cost Accounting Department
  • Mentor, train and develop a staff of centralized cost accounting professionals
  • Act as the key liaison to the Division Operations Finance leads in all aspects of cost accounting
  • Develop new, robust processes to drive productivity in the cost accounting function
  • Own the development of the annual operating plan
  • Drive continuous improvement and own the delivery of the annual cost roll process
  • Manage the process of assessing inventory for excess and obsolescence reserves
  • Lead monthly close process for team’s cost accounting tasks
  • Review and approve manual GL journal entries and monthly balance sheet reconciliations
  • Analysis of manufacturing variances and the capitalization of variances
  • Assist with the coordination and deliverables for quarterly reviews and annual audits performed by internal and external auditors
  • Prepare ad hoc reporting and analyses and assist team with research on cost accounting questions and assist with special projects as requested.
  • Review work and conduct goal setting, performance evaluations and career development discussions for team
  • Identify and drive process improvement initiatives

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Degree in Accounting or Finance; preferably MBA and/or CMA or CPA certification
  • 7-10 years of direct experience in accounting, reporting, and costing leadership within a large, professionally managed operating company
  • Manufacturing background with in-depth knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, and financial reporting for a manufacturing organization
  • Experience leading diverse global financial consolidations in an accurate and timely manner
  • Demonstrated experience in a large, multinational, heavily matrixed organization
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills in large matrix organizations
  • Ability to influence and engage business partners, peers , direct/indirect reports; Have ability to effectively interface with senior management
  • Self-reliant, problem solver and results oriented
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with Hyperion/HFM preferred SAP, JD Edwards Enterprise One, Hyperion Financial Management and Hyperion Enterprise
  • Strong team building skills and proven ability to work with a diverse group of people in a global-matrixed environment
  • Demonstrated success attracting, recruiting, developing and retaining high-potential talent
  • You possess a strong knowledge of cost accounting principles including capitalization of variances, E&O reserves, and experience with rolling standard costs
  • You have prior experience working with financial software such as SAP, JD Edwards Enterprise One, Hyperion Financial Management and Hyperion Enterprise
