Position Summary

The Institutional Research (IR) department at WGU serves as the heart of research, data analytics, and data-driven decision making at Western Governors University. Our motto is Free the Data. The IR department at WGU is a group of talented data scientists, data engineers, and researchers who are passionate about helping students reach their highest potential through education. At WGU, the IR team has deep expertise in analytical methods, machine learning, learning analytics, and big data. We are fun loving technical folks with a passion for data and education.

The Director of Analytics is responsible for developing a team of data scientists to provide actionable insights and data products to leaders across WGU. The Director works with WGU leaders to understand their strategies, objectives, and operational levers in order to consult on data products and analysis that will drive change and improve outcomes. The successful candidate is the in-house expert in analytical methods. The leader is responsible for developing a team to deliver sound and rigorous analysis that will drive action across WGU. As a Director, this leader is responsible for contributing to the overall WGU strategy in addition to the functional responsibilities.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Drive organizational action as a result of analytics to improve student outcomes and other university objectives
  • Work with leaders across WGU to understand analytic needs and operational levers
  • Provide technical guidance on analytic methods and tool sets
  • Responsible for the hiring, training, and development of data scientists
  • Responsible for the timeliness, accuracy, and quality of reports and analysis
  • On-going development and improvement of WGU's analytical capabilities
  • Contribute to strategic planning, lead team to deliver against strategic and operational goals

Required Skills:

  • Advanced programming skills in SQL, python, R, or SAS
  • Deep understanding of inferential statistics
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative research methods
  • Track record of success in hiring, developing, engaging top talent
  • Experience in deployment of enterprise data analytic tools
  • Experience with enterprise data reporting tools (Cognos, Tableau)
  • Understanding of Big Data (parallel processing, AWS tools, Spark)
  • Experience in higher education, competency-based and on-line is a plus
  • Demonstrated success leading in entrepreneurial business operations experiencing high growth
  • Experience planning and managing budget, meeting fiscal objectives

Required Experience

  • Masters degree in an Applied Math Discipline (Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, etc.) or Business Administration
  • 5 years' experience in a people leadership capacity in data analytics
