Job Summary

This is a lead role in technical accounting policy focused on researching and analyzing complex accounting issues and transactions, applying relevant technical guidance, and interpreting appropriately. The key responsibilities are to ensure up-to-date company-wide accounting policies are in compliance with relevant authoritative accounting literature, leading company-wide implementations of new accounting policies and close collaboration with key business partners across the enterprise to provide timely and accurate accounting advice.

Principal Duties & ResponsibilitiesCollaborates with senior management and others across business units to interpret new, existing, proposed, and finalized accounting standards to determine the potential impact to the organization; provides summary of accounting impacts to management and business partners

 Provides thorough expertise on new regulations and translates new pronouncements so that business partners with different levels of expertise can understand relevant implications

Formulates new policy; works with other members of Accounting Policy & Advisory Team to draft, or facilitate drafting, policies; reviews policies with management and finalizes accounting policies in accordance with company operational policies and procedures

Directs and performs technical accounting research and provides interpretation of ambiguous and complex accounting literature to address technical accounting questions

Directly manages Accounting Policy Team in Columbus and partners with Accounting Policy and Advisory team members in Japan and New York

Monitors accounting standard and regulatory developments and anticipates impact on accounting; participates in discussions and conferences with standard setters, regulators, and other industry participants; drafts formal comment letters to various standard-setting groups, including the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC); the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC); and through resources in Japan, the Accounting Standards Board of Japan (ASBJ)

Collaborates and works closely with Financial Services personnel in the review and analysis of significant, and highly complex business transactions, including, but not limited to: business combinations, reinsurance transactions, new debt and equity issues, and new insurance products

Plays a key partnership role in the monitoring of the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Japan, as needed, and, if necessary, develops system requirements under IFRS, including accounting policy elections, monitoring IASB developments and convergence with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Communicates accounting policies and positions both verbally and in writing with business partners, management, external and internal auditors

Coordinates updates to the Global Accounting Policy Library and accounting checklists; continually evaluates departmental processes and recommends process improvements; provides expertise in recommending enhancements and/or additions to the Manual

Represents the company externally on issues relating to accounting policy through participation in industry-wide associations and related organizational meetings

Identifies relevant accounting considerations and provides interpretation on US GAAP, JGAAP, Statutory, FSR, US Tax, and J Tax, as relevant

Provides key advice on significant business/product decisions, providing technical expertise as needed


Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 10+ years of experience in Finance or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Public accounting experience a plus

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required

Job Knowledge & Skills

Strong knowledge of Treasury and Tax

Insurance industry experience

 Experience with or exposure to Japan and JGAAP

Self-motivated and able to work in a fluid environment

Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, JGAAP, SEC regulations, U.S. and Japan regulatory reporting, general investment and capital dynamics

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal

Detail oriented and highly organized with the ability to work on multiple projects with different deadlines

Strong analytical and problem solving skills
