A Day in the Life of a DevOps System Engineer:


This position will be a part of a DevOps Team with collaborative efforts; all supporting IT efforts to automate regression testing, build capacity planning/performance monitoring tools, automate release and deployment processes, create communication tools, configure and implement IT monitoring and alerting tools for Infrastructure components and customized applications. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in engineering leadership, the ability to develop/implement standard engineering practices, as well as provide detailed documentation upon project completion.


  • Collaborate to configure Load Test Environment along with automated regression tests, scripts/processes/tools for capacity planning, performance monitoring tools/trending analysis, release builds, continuous integration, deployment automation
  • Participate and lead the selection of IT suite of tools, best practices, configure and implement services
  • Configure and implement automated regression test tools (i.e. Selenium) to be used at the discretion of the Operations Teams (when there is a new build or configuration) or in lower environments (to satisfy changes that are implemented)
  • Configure and implement monitoring/alerting tools for key infrastructure components, applications, databases & network components (using graphite ideally)
  • Design, build and maintain release scripts
  • Configure and manage continuous integration servers
  • Run manual or automated regular builds
  • Conduct installation planning and deployment to all platforms and environments, including but not limited to QA, UAT/Pre-Production, and Production, related to the Maintenance Releaseschedule
  • Develops and tracks installation validation plans
  • Assist in teaching the QA users how to utilize tools
  • Assist with the communications strategy:
    • Timely ‘decision-makers’ communication tool
    • Effective communication at the start and throughout a major Operational event; to include the ability to use texting and/or technology when email is not available

  • Collaborate with team members and with specific business lines to create integral performance measures within key applications where thresholds are configured and alerts are generated (i.e. User/System Metrics
  • Automate deployments, monitoring and self-healing
  • Support development infrastructure
  • Assist with failover process
  • Assist with security reviews in identifying and/or resolving potential risks


What you can bring to Meridian:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer related area is required
  • Certification in IT related discipline is preferred
  • ITIL Foundations preferred
  • Minimum of four (4) to six (6) years’ experience in a similar position is required
  • Strong coding capability in more than one language, especially Python, Java, Bash
  • Experience working with and coding automated configuration and infrastructure deployment management tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible & Jenkins
  • Experience implementing systems and application performance monitoring tools such as AppDynamics or Splunk
  • Expert in Linux, including scripting and performance
  • In depth experience with commonly used automation and monitoring tools
  • Expertise in more than one language, especially Python, Java
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures related to QA, Load Testing and Development Life cycle
  • Knowledge of standardized concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Installation, configuration, and maintenance of DevOps Infrastructure
  • Excellent troubleshooting and technical documentation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-driven, motivated, goal oriented and able to take full responsibility for actions
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal & relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
