Position Description

Activision Publishing’s Central Studios seeks a Design Director to spearhead creative leadership across several of Activision’s games. The Design Director will report into the Vice President of Design, be a creative expert supporting our studios and will help shape and align the creative goals of our games.




Product Vision / Brand Stewardship

  • Work with developers and key stakeholders in the creation and maintenance of the creative vision to help drive franchises forward, and ensure feature sets tie into overall title positioning and franchise goals
  • Partner with the Production, Marketing, Analytics, Consumer Insights and Business teams to define long-term creative plans for product lines, brands and lines of business
  • Provide creative direction regarding brand, lines of current and new business models/monetization
  • Provide ongoing creative support and leadership of the product vision and pillars throughout development
  • Align with User Research and Creative Specialists on creative guidance to support the developer and ensure qualitative support is prioritized and communicated effectively
  • Recommend and implement new creative processes where efficiencies are needed to improve on-time, on-budget, on-quality delivery
  • Partner to shape a long-term creative view towards developing products with an eye toward franchise, sequels, product line extensions, ports, and new platform capabilities
  • Oversee all SKUs on project, working with all developers, helping to guide and direct the player experience from concept to completion
  • Lead/Partner with developers to ensure specific game features are tied to overall title positioning and goals
  • Actively playing builds, leading group feedback sessions to ensure regular quality assessments are provided to senior and executive management with respect to product goals; ensuring awareness and alignment between all team stakeholders
  • Provide game quality assessments for the company Greenlight process; be able to present information and opinions in Greenlight meetings

Creative Ambassador

  • Act as primary point of contact with Game Development Studios, Marketing, PR, Consumer Insights, Business teams and external contractors across creative project initiatives
  • Develop strong relationships with development teams in order to successfully collaborate, influence, and support them
  • Create a culture that provides continuous feedback, support and empowerment; foster positive working relationships with an emphasis on communication
  • Establish model behavior that supports Activision’s standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethics
  • Make onsite visits to developers as part of overall creative partnership management of SKUs
  • Be able to communicate development progress/status to senior and executive management
  • Effectively demo the game internally and externally to build buzz with intended audiences
  • Share best practices across all aspects of creative with studios and partner teams
  • Be an internal and external advocate for the project


Design Specialist

  • Support our studios with expert design guidance consultancy across systems, narrative, UX and monetization
  • Ensure cross pollination of design best practices via presentations, design documentation and verbally
  • Partner closely on and offsite with studio design leadership to help support the development of titles
  • Work closely across Analytics, Production, Marketing and Business teams to build alignment in support of studio design goals
  • Actively guide teams to reach target design goals offering mentoring and support where possible
  • Review and provide feedback on designs aligned with studio leads and at time personally own the creation of designs under studio guidance

People Management

  • Provide day-to-day management, mentorship, and leadership to others, guiding them in resolving issues and helping develop their overall skills
  • Manage the long-term career development of others in Creative
  • Continually recognize and reward employees for strong performance

Year 1 success will include the following –

  • Build effective relationships and credibility within Design Department and Studios
  • Drive financial accountability and partner to address challenges as they arise
  • Strengthen operational processes, procedures and communications 


Position Requirements

  • 15+ years in design with previously held leadership/senior Design roles in several shipped AAA games
  • Deep understanding of what it takes to develop and ship a game with creative excellence
  • Thorough understanding of workflows, design systems, pipeline and process
  • Leadership personality with ability to communicate across multiple studios, Corporate Leadership and publishing teams within Activision
  • Strong desire for and deep knowledge of Activision’s portfolio of games
  • Ability to multi-task and thrive in a challenging and ambiguous environment
  • Overall understanding of Activision franchises and gaming universe


Undergraduate degree and MBA preferred.
