Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsion Systems is currently seeking a Design Analysis Engineer for our Composite Structures/Case Design team at the Promontory (Brigham), UT facility.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Engineer Structural is responsible for aiding the development including hardware design by analysis of flight hardware for composite rocket motor cases and related structures:

·Contribute to major design efforts and coordinate technical efforts based on knowledge and experience

  • Create designs for future rocket motor case products using advanced in-house codes coupled with finite element analysis
  • Develop engineering documentation products (drawings, specifications, design and analysis reports, test plans, test reports, etc.)
  • Oversee and plan testing for development and qualification of flight hardware products.


Job Duties:

  • Design rocket motor cases using Northrop Grumman proprietary computer codes.
  • Design associated components and structures, both composite and metallic, to achieve lowest cost from design and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Perform 2D and 3D structural analysis for the design of flight hardware and test articles using Siemens NX CAD software and ABAQUS/CAE tools to optimize mass.
  • Create engineering drawings and specifications to define design for hardware fabrication, write test plans, support fabrication efforts, oversee testing, analyze test data and make revisions to design based on results.
  • Learn and help maintain standard design processes.


Experience Requirements:

  • Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of engineering design and analysis of composite structures experience with a BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil (Structural) Engineering or equivalent. BS degree with 2 years of experience or MS degree with 0 years of experience is required.


Experience Preferred:

  • Knowledgeable of Composite Structures Design, Analysis and Optimization is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable of Siemens NX, ABAQUS/CAE and ABAQUS solver are a plus.


Skills & Qualifications:

Broad understanding of composite materials in design and processing

  • Broad understanding of Classical Lamination Theory and related tools for design as well as optimization techniques for minimum mass structures.
  • Strong knowledge of design and analysis of flight structures.
  • Strong skills in CAD and Finite Element Analysis with the ability to quickly learn new design code and FEA tools.
  • Experience/familiarity with composite manufacturing processes such as filament winding, tape and hand layup
  • GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis and drawing preparation skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Detail oriented but able to understand the big picture.


Education/Certifications

  • BS/MS degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace Engineering required.


Salary Range: $73,400 USD - $110,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
