Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategy

  • Direct the Department to ensure its programs embody core values that:
  • facilitate excellence in teaching by engaging multiple perspectives and embracing experimentation utilizing inquiry-based methods, participatory strategies, and reflection;

  • deepen and broaden public access to creative and socially engaged practices through collaborative program development with artists;

  • provide visitor-centered selection of multiple offerings, both onsite and online, that can be accessed by audiences with a range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences;

  • offer learning opportunities for audiences across generations that foster and sustain engagement with art;

  • foster a culture of innovation within the department and encourage all staff to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices

  • generate research in the art, education, and museum fields.

  • Provide leadership for ongoing programs and initiatives, including the hallmark Learning Through Art (LTA) artist residency program; on-site school and family programs, internships, access programs, adult interpretive programs, and public adult programs.

  • Engage with the museum's Board of Trustees at meetings and other activities. Provide presentations, reports and data on departmental activities.

  • Oversee and engage with the Education Committee and coordinate three meetings annually, each accompanied by reports highlighting educational activities and initiatives, and occasional guest speakers; work with the Museum Director, Committee Chair, and Advancement department to identify and recruit a diverse range of new members.

  • Assume leadership roles and actively participate in regional, national, and international professional organizations and networks as relevant.



Internal and External Communications & Collaboration

  • Create national/international visibility for communications and outreach:
  • Work with Communications department to promote awareness of education programs and to maximize program attendance; maintain departmental mail lists, coordinate regular mailings, e-blasts and social media feeds to market the program and departmental activities and achievements;
  • Publish print and web-based educational materials and evaluation studies and disseminate program research and documentation;
  • ​​​Produce educational publications, including resource guides for K-12 educators; exhibition-related materials for general museum audience, family guide publications, among others.
  • Work interdepartmentally to foster a team-oriented approach to exhibition and program development; work closely with curatorial and editorial to develop and review all exhibition-related interpretive materials.

  • Work with the Museum Director, COO and Advancement Department to establish funding priorities, generate funding proposals, and assist with grant-related follow-up reporting; steward education funders and identify and cultivate new prospects.

  • Collaborate and sustain relationships with other community, cultural and academic organizations in program development.



Administration & Finance

  • Oversee the administration, financial management, programming, and maintenance of the the Sackler Center for Arts Education, an 8200-square-foot learning laboratory in the lower level of the museum which functions as the epicenter for the development and implementation of opportunities for youth, families and adults to have meaningful encounters with art.

  • Prepare and monitor the departmental budget and revenue projections.

  • Review and approve all department expenses.




Qualifications and Requirements:

  • M.A. in Art/Museum Education, art history or a related field.

  • Extensive knowledge of modern and contemporary art and experience working with artists and generating audience engagement with collections, exhibitions, and arts programming.

  • 5-7 years of senior level administrative experience and oversight of an art museum education department.

  • Visionary mindset and strategic thinker, able to lead and manage a complex department.

  • Demonstrated expertise in fundraising and collaboration with development department and donors.

  • Excellent writing, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Professional experience working internationally is desirable.
