The Infectious Disease Sciences (IDS) Program within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division actively conducts and engages in research related to infections in the immunocompromised host, respiratory viruses, bacterial vaginosis (BV), microbiota, HIV/HSV interactions and HIV research.

The Data Management Analyst within the Infectious Disease Sciences (IDS) Program will be expected toperform a variety of tasks related to the ongoing needs of translational studies, clinical trials, and epidemiologic investigations related to Data Curation, Data Management, and Data Governance. This position participates in the design of data collection and management systems; extracts, cleans, and prepares data from electronic medical records and research databases for analysis; produces tables and figures of data summaries. The incumbent will work in teams consisting of principal investigators, senior biostatisticians, scientific staff, academic trainees, project managers and data coordinators.


The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring clean data are available for analysis, creating or overseeing the creation of research databases, developing data quality assurance plans, and producing tables and figures of data summaries.

Data curation:

  • Perform data queries from electronic medical records and research databases
  • Extract, clean, and integrate electronic medical record data to support ongoing quality improvement and related research projects
  • Prepare data for analysis, including data cleaning and dataset documentation
  • Prepare tables and figures of data summaries for use in project reports, quality improvement reports, grant proposals, and scientific papers
  • Report unexpected patterns or issues observed in data outputs
  • Manage the operations for a variety of data pipelines, ensure that source data are loading into the data systems without error. Mitigate errors that occur.
  • Troubleshoot data-related problems and system operations as needed

Data management:

  • Assist in the requirements and techniques for ensuring quality data collection
  • Create and/or oversee the creation of databases in REDCap or Access
  • Develop and refine logical data models to ensure they support data storage, integration, and reporting requirements
  • Work closely with faculty, statisticians, and research staff, to understand requirements for data annotation
  • Design, develop, and maintain data mappings, data rules, and data transformations to populate databases with source data
  • Assist in monitoring and analyzing information and data systems to evaluate their performance and recommend improvements as needed
  • Assist in testing and system validation to troubleshoot issues related to data management systems

Data governace:

  • Assist in the development of quality assurance procedures for on-going data collection and analysis
  • Participate in development of governance policies and processes around data storage, use, and access within Infectious Disease Sciences Program
  • Work with project sponsors, stakeholders, and team members to ensure proper data access, use and data integrity per regulatory requirements and divisional/center policies
  • Collaborate in the development, adoption, and adherence of data standards
  • Liaise with Center’s IT department on development/implementation of artificial intellgence processes as needed


Required qualifications:

  • BS/BA in computer science, informatics, or relevant field
  • 3 years’ experience as data architect, manager, curator, or analyst
  • Excellent understanding of data administration and management functions, especially in patient-oriented research
  • Familiarity with database and information system technologies, including intermediate SQL skills and experience working with relational databases
  • High level of competency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience in data management and data cleaning, preferably of healthcare or medical data
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and leadership skills
  • Must be organized and detail oriented, with excellent documentation skills and commitment toaccuracy
  • Must be flexible, work well within a team environment, and be capable of meeting tight time lines

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with EPIC, Cerner or other electronic health records systems
  • Experience creating and working with REDCap databases
  • Experience with laboratory assay data or clinial trial data
  • Proficiency in R, SAS, or Stata statistical software
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and disease processes, and familiarity with Infectious Diseases and/or oncology clinical information and research
  • Advanced training in computer or data science, programming, or informatics
