Background Description:

A Database Engineer contributes to the development, delivery, and maintenance of software solutions by developing or managing relational and non-relational database software solutions. This person will create or modify SQL (stored procedures, adhoc, or in a Data Access Layer), review or improve existing SQL, and optimize SQL execution to ensure solution quality before deployment and at run time. The Database Engineer evaluates, tests, and optimizes the stored procedures and/or data schema change processes to ensure accuracy, alignment with the code, and streamlined deployment. This person is also proficient in noSQL databases applications and develops solutions for non-relational database needs. In addition, the Database Engineer trains and coaches more junior developers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architecture/Design
    • Analyzes the requirements, investigating the needs for today and considering the future growth.
    • Captures and documents functional requirements and non-functional system, performance, or securitydatabase requirements
    • Leads or participates in the database schema design for all new development as needed to meet requirements.
    • Is able to provide guidance on when to use a relational or non-relational database, based on software requirements.
  • Develop/Test
    • Conceptualizes and develops high quality SQL using established SQL coding standards and development best practices
    • Conceptualizes and develops high quality queries or other actions for noSQL databases using established standards and best practices.
    • Identifies long running or blocking SQL or stored procedures and is proficient in optimizing SQL and stored procedures execution
    • Identifies sub-optimal noSQL (non-relational) database queries and is proficient in optimizing execution
    • Develops stored procedure unit tests, automated tests, and performance tests as needed to ensure quality, supporting general debugging and isolating areas for improvement. Capture and analyze performance test metrics and provide operational documentation.
    • Creates appropriate documentation such as implementation manuals, support manuals/playbooks, performance testing guidelines, etc. as needed to run/support the software.
    • Investigates and resolves or participates in the resolution of defects or bugs in the software as it relates to SQL execution or optimization.
  • Other:
    • Communicates effectively with customers and software vendors.
    • Protects confidentiality of any PHI information if exposed.
    • Knowledgeable in healthcare data security requirements and provides guidance to team members.
    • Provides support and mentoring to junior staff from all disciplines on an informal basis
    • Proactively seeks to enhance knowledge and experience, drawing on senior colleagues as well as self-study.
    • Performs other work-related duties as assigned by Leader.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or appropriate experience
  • Outstanding academic performance (3.0 or higher cumulative GPA)
  • Preferred majors are Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Information Systems/Decision Sciences, Mathematics, Sciences, or other STEM related majors.

Professional Skills, Requirements, and Experience:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in software and database development and delivering high quality software
  • Design/Architecture
    • Advanced knowledge and strong evidence of proven demonstrable experience in data schema design and SQL or noSQL optimization
  • Business Acumen
    • Able to translate RFP, customer, or PM/PO comments into database requirements and document the requirements appropriately (PRDs, JIRA stories, etc.)
  • Technical
    • Strong evidence of proven demonstrable experience on the principles, theories, techniques, and methodologies of SQL or noSQL development, execution, systems analysis.
    • Advanced knowledge and proven demonstrable experience in coding, data modeling, database schema design, and object-oriented analysis/design/programming procedures and techniques.
    • Strong demonstrable evidence of advanced knowledge/expertise and hands-on experience with SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2016 including design and programming techniques. Also knowledgeable in noSQL databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, CouchDB, etc.
    • Strong demonstrable evidence of advanced knowledge/expertise or hands-on experience with SQL or noSQL design tools, ETL using DTS, SSIS, command line and other technologies
    • Analyzes data to identify inconsistencies
    • Advanced knowledge of used operating systems.
    • Advanced knowledge of standard development tools, data stores, and testing tools.
    • Knowledge in database scaling.
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies

    • Strong demonstrable evidence of technical estimation skills
    • Strong demonstrable evidence of Agile (Scrum) development experience
