A Data Communications Specialist is an information technology professional who designs, implements, and troubleshoots computer networks. These include Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN/Wi-Fi), Firewalls, DMZs, and Internet. In general, a Data Communications Specialist will not regularly perform system administration tasks, but will instead concentrate on high-level network related duties such as network architecture, network design, choosing of network devices, troubleshooting outages and/or performance issues. A Data Communications Specialist will determine the needs as the network grows and plan the vision and architecture to support this growth. A Data Communications Specialist actively monitors system network performance to identify and solve data communication problems in performing equipment repairs or replacements. The individual actively participates in technical research and development to drive innovation with the data communications environments.
