As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will contribute to the definition and development of new thermal and cryogenic systems for launch vehicles, in-space systems, planetary landers and crewed vehicles. You'll need significant depth in thermal/fluids analysis and systems engineering processes as well as breadth in space applications. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced and often uncertain environment, contributing to innovative solutions, while demonstrating personal leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable human spaceflight.
- Participate in research, design, development, evaluation, and deployment of novel fluid systems for launch and in-space systems or vehicles.
- Infuse new thermal and cryogenic technologies into Blue Origin’s projects and systems.
- Participate in the development of fluid systems including system architecture definition, thermo-fluid system modeling, component sizing, and conceptual design.
- Conduct fluid system technology maturation and testing (analysis, computational, experimental)
- Document, report, and present research results to colleagues, program management, business unit leaders, and customers
- Support and participate in gated reviews, concept studies, and preliminary design activities
- Mentor and technically assist other engineers
- M.S. in Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace engineering or related field.
- 6+ years of experience in fluids system, cryogenics, and thermodynamics.
- Demonstrated system analysis experience with cryogenic and/or in-space fluid systems, especially LOX, LH2, and LNG
- Significant experience and advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: cryogenics, cryocoolers, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermal systems design, control theory.
- Extensive understanding in heat transfer, thermal and cryogenic system design, analytical modeling practices.
- Proficiency in the transient thermo-fluid modeling of both compressible and incompressible fluids.
- Working knowledge of fluid components such as valves, regulators, and fittings.
- Demonstrated experience setting up and executing tests on fluid system components.
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Experience with fluid system instrumentation and data acquisition hardware.
- Ability and willingness to work in different environments, including office, shop floor, labs, and/or outdoor test facilities
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
- Ph.D. in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace engineering
- Hardware development experience including assembly, fabrication, verification and test
- Extensive knowledge of instrument or spacecraft technologies and detailed engineering issues.
- Demonstrated experience with flight system and instrument integration and test.
- Experience with fluid or thermal modelling tools (e.g., ANSYS Workbench, ANSYS Classic, SINDA/FLUINT, TMG, CFD++, Fluent CFD, SPF, Thermal Desktop, Trasys, MINIVER)
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C/C++, FORTRAN, MATLAB).
- Proficiency 3D CAD software (Creo Pro/E and Pro/E Piping module preferred)
