BA/BS with at least 5 years of experience or an advanced degree with 3 years of experience, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal nine years.

Expertise in operation of high-end microscopes like the Titan Krios, including routine maintenance and troubleshooting, resolution of hardware/software issues and, if required, coordination of external instrument support. The candidate will also be required to be proficient in the use of standard data collection packages such as EPU and/or Serial-EM and is expected to stay up to date with and be able to adapt to various software advancements within the field. The candidate must demonstrate effective verbal and written communication and be able to work in a team of scientists from different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. and expertise in data processing for single particle cryo-EM using an ensemble of available software packages to guide non-expert users. Experience with cryo-electron tomography both in terms of hardware and data collection methods is also highly sought after. Relevant postdoctoral and/or industry experience is also a plus.

About the Job

The Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota seeks qualified applicants for a Facility Manager/technician position within the newly established Cryo-EM facility. The successful candidate will help support the local research community at The Hormel Institute as well as nearby academic institutions. The EM facility includes an FEI Titan Krios equipped with a Falcon-III direct electron detector as well as a Volta Phase Plate. The EM facility also houses an FEI Tecnai Spirit with a CCD camera, and state of the art sample preparation equipment including an FEI Vitrobot Mark IV plunger for grid freezing, a Leica EMACE 600 glow discharger, as well as a plasma cleaner and ProteoPlex for buffer screening and optimization. A planned expansion includes the procurement of a FEI Glacios screening microscope and Gatan K3 detector upgrade. In addition to a core team of structural biologists in-house, the Hormel Institute enjoys strong support from collaborations with the Mayo Clinic, a world-renowned medical center in neighboring Rochester, and the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the execution of the following tasks:

1. Help with sample preparation (conventional EM and cryo-EM). (20%)

2. Instrument operation including image acquisition and microscope maintenance. (30%)

3. Help with data analysis including image analysis and data processing. (10%)

4. User support and training. (20%)

5. Supervise up to two Cryo-EM technicians. (20%)

The Hormel Institute, a biomedical research center of the University of Minnesota, was established in 1942 and has an excellent reputation and long history for producing world-class medical research.
