Are you looking for an opportunity to kick-start your legal career? We have an opportunity for you to join the team at Americans for Prosperity to be an in-house legal counsel.

You will be called upon to provide effective legal advice to clients primarily related to political and election law, both federal and state, with regular involvement in contracts, personnel matters, finance, tax, business operations, and intellectual property. This role will also have a heavy focus on communications, non-profit law, and lobbying compliance.

Your Responsibilities Include

  • Provide legal guidance on a variety of legal issues impacting the organization
  • Participate in the development of organizational policies, procedures, and programs
  • Analyze and interpret laws, statutes, and regulations across multiple states
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, including but not limited to exempt non-profit organizations, lobbying, and campaign finance laws
  • Review and draft contracts both external and internal to that they are contractually sound
  • Negotiate contractual terms on behalf of the organizations

Knowledge and Skills You Bring to the Organization

  • 1 year of relevant experience
  • Juris Doctor degree and license in good standing with a state bar
  • Exposure to and/or familiarity with the following areas of law: exempt non-profit organizations, lobbying, and campaign finance
  • Understanding of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations and 527-PACs
  • Strong commitment to advancing the organization's vision of a more free and open society that fosters long-term peace, human dignity, and well-being where people succeed by helping others
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to translate legal concepts for non-lawyers and strong interpersonal skills
  • Apply combined business and legal judgment to resolve matters
  • Ability to direct and manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Familiarity with public communications and applying compliance to it
  • Willingness to travel periodically
