SSR is Looking for a Corporate Risk Manager for Nashville


The Corporate Risk Manager provides SSR with a proactive corporate resource to manage all professional liability insurance coverages, negotiations, and risk opportunities.  This position minimizes risk opportunities through education, response to issues, and the awareness of risk management and liability issues throughout the firm.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Manages and negotiates professional liability insurance coverage for the firm, with the involvement of the CFO
  • Develops and coordinates risk management and liability issue awareness training programs specific to technical, project management, and leadership staff levels on topics such as basic risk management, contract language and structure and usage of forms and construction administration phase work tasks and obligations
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of risk management tools such as a safety manual,
    CA manual, PM resource manual and other documents as may be necessary
  • Reviews and makes recommendation on all non-standard professional services contracts for risk management and liability purposes and coordinates contract reviews by professional liability carrier counsel and other legal counsel resources, as requested
  • Creates non-standard agreements for specific professional service engagements, sub-consultant agreements, confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements, utilizing legal counsel and other resources as needed for contract development
  • Continually reviews standard contract evolution (AIA, EJCDC, etc.) and advises as to use within SSR
  • Provides pre-claim assistance to project teams including issue review, risk assessment, response planning and general guidance for pre-claim management
  • Oversees all issue resolution documentation and agreements for liability release, assignment of responsibility and disclosures while developing and maintaining a database of all risk management issues including settlements reached, fees written off or other compensation provided
  • Manages and serves as the primary contact with PL carrier and legal counsel for risk management claims and issues; determines process or criteria for issues that warrant advice to carrier on potential claims and serves as the key communicator to PL carrier during claims resolution process
  • Provides oversight of annual renewal process including summarizing claim history, direction, solicitation for insurance coverage and negotiation of policy limits and language; coordinates between multiple carriers and differing policy year’s applicability and coordinates educational programs and services offered by PL carriers
  • Reviews acquisition target firm contracts and project obligations from a risk management perspective while assessing possible liabilities and exposures to SSR; reviews current projects for risk management issues, as requested
  • Provides reporting to management on a regular basis regarding the status of project risk management issues, status of claims, current levels of liability exposure, and resolution costs
  • Collects and reviews written Claim Incident Reports from Project Managers for potential claims
  • Manages claims process; coordinates with professional liability carrier; hires and manages outside council; attends mediation meetings as necessary; tracks, monitors, and estimates claims expenses (legal and settlement costs); works with council on settlement agreements; makes recommendations to management on claim resolution strategy and settlement amounts
  • Notifies Technical Resource Group within the Programs of possible design issues resulting from risk issues and claims, as necessary
  • Participates in assessing potential risk issues related to new business lines and service ventures, as requested
  • Maintains and continues to develop SSR Proposal Writer Application, as needed
  • Hires and manages outside risk management legal associates


An ideal candidate will possess the following requirements:


  • BSdegree in an engineering discipline or a comparable technical discipline
  • Ten or more years of experience in the engineering services or construction field
  • At least three years working directly with risk management issues in the construction or engineering services area
