Position Summary:
Responsible for the assistance in the coordination of technical operations for the "core lab" designated sections (Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Urinalysis and Coagulation, and Blood Bank, in applicable laboratories)

Experience:
6 years direct experience in clinical laboratory disciplines

License & Education:
  • ASCP Certification, New York State Medical Technologist license required.
  • Education in accordance with the NYS Office of Professions and CLIA requirements of testing personnel.

Essential Functions:
  1. Coordinating Technical Operations:
    • Supervision for all aspects of technical performance of personnel assigned to core lab on all shifts. This includes but is not limited to training, initial assessment, competency evaluation.
    • Able to perform routine and advanced testing functions productively, competently, and proficiently in all core lab disciplines. Maintains skills and proficiency with all testing in section and can assist any employee with technical or procedural problems with any testing in section.
    • Assists in continuing education within the laboratory, including planning, leading and presenting material to staff.
    • Assists Laboratory Manager to determine schedule assignments within the laboratory
    • Orders and maintains adequate supplies and inventory without frequent use of short notice orders in cost effective manner. Ensures continual rotation of inventory with minimal outdating of products.
    • Responsible for execution of instrument maintenance, maintenance documentation, observance and correction of trends, provisions in cases of instrument failure and evaluation of instrument maintenance contract proposal.
    • Assists in compliance activities for the laboratory proficiency testing program.
  2. Communication:
    • Responsible for communication with all shifts, hospital departments, colleagues to carry out activities within the core lab area this includes technical changes, updates, and general information.
    • Responsible for maintaining good communication with interaction and problem solving with appropriate Laboratory Directors and lab staff concerning problems, incidents and personnel issues.
    • Plans, leads, attend meetings, as necessary. Actively participates to the meeting and communicated outcomes with team members.
  3. Regulatory:
    • Responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state and/or JCAHO or other requirements for activities taking place in areas of responsibility. Meets with inspecting agencies as needed and provides the information required to inspectors, agencies, assessors as requested.
  4. QA/Nonconformances:
    • Responsible for ensuring the accuracy & timeliness of all reports & testing performed in the area of responsibility. Review of patient results & overall department surveillance to ensure completeness required laboratory documentation including nonconformance events investigations.
  5. Quality Control:
    • Responsible for full review and continued adherence to quality control, quality assurance and
      appropriate maintenance of all techniques and instrumentation in areas of responsibility, including correct response to instrument malfunctions. Works to correct problems with quality assurance,
      quality control and instruct staff regarding appropriate measures to ensure accuracy of results.
  6. Project Planning:
    • Responsible for assistance in planning and execution and continued upgrading of instrumentation and procedures, to include but not limited to new instrument evaluation, new testing or procedures and
      evaluation of the most effective methods, reagents and controls.
  7. Policies and Procedures:
    • Develops, updates (minimum-annually) and maintains complete understandable and workable, user-
      friendly procedure manuals, orientation and competency documentation and assists with the compilation of data needed for other laboratory publications. This includes communication of changes to
      laboratory staff.
  8. Administrative Support responsibilities:
    • Assists Laboratory Manager/Administrative Director in the competency assessment of employees, both initial ,6 month, annual and has an established method within section to maintain all employee's competency. At times will be requested to have input involving corrective action on competency assessments.
  9. Responsible for all duties as indicated in the Medical Technologist job description.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Other Duties:
  1. Demonstrates age specific competencies as per unit standards.
  2. Consistently demonstrates good judgment, ability to assess situations, consider alternatives, and select appropriate course of action. Consults supervisor as appropriate.
  3. Fully supports and utilizes the organization's Performance Improvement initiatives and processes - participates in activities as established and agreed to, identifying problems and working toward resolution.

The pay for this position ranges from $32.60-$51.63 per hour.
