Purpose of the Position:

Assumes responsibility for the management of the Consumer Credit Underwriting Department including the efficient and effective operation of the consumer loan origination and credit function. Has overall responsibility for the underwriting and origination of general consumer and consumer real estate loan and the delivery of documents of general consumer loans. Manages a group of senior and junior level underwriters in a centralized environment. Provides assistance to the retail and private banking divisions in the development of consumer and consumer real estate loan products. Significant contributor to development of credit policy and assists with the implementation and support of the online channel for applications and decisioning.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assumes responsibility for the efficient and effective operation of consumer credit function by:

    • Establishing operating and compliance policies and procedures for the consumer loan origination and credit underwriting function

    • Maintaining and updating the bank’s Consumer Loan Policy

    • Insuring proper implementation and compliance with these policies and procedures

    • Making recommendations for personnel regarding employment, performance ratings, salary changes, promotions, transfers, and terminations

    • Monitoring and reviewing consumer loan approvals and denials in support of the bank’s Fair Lending initiatives

    • Managing the loan origination system by working closely with the Information Technology department to ensure that all updates are properly implemented and tested, by making recommendations for changes in system parameters, and by assisting in the design and development of required management reports

  • Serves as a senior consumer lender, underwriting larger or more complex transactions; also underwrites routine credits as volume dictates

  • Serves as the credit scoring manager by requesting information from the credit bureaus on the applicable credit bureau scores, reviewing that information, and recommending any changes in the bank’s use of the credit bureau score

  • Chairs the Consumer Credit Policy Committee and is responsible for scheduling regular meetings, preparing the agendas, and compiling the necessary reports

  • Responsible for insuring compliance with appropriate laws and regulations. Works with the bank’s compliance officer on making necessary procedural changes to comply with new or revised laws and/or regulations. Communicates regulatory changes to the staff and coordinates the necessary training

  • Assists product and/or sales managers in the retail and private banking divisions in the development of consumer loan products, providing input on underwriting standards

  • Serves as a liaison to other departments and branches on aspects of consumer loan origination and underwriting

  • Responsible for insuring prompt “turnaround” time on credit decisions and timely and accurate delivery of general consumer loan documents

  • Responsible for overseeing communications with customers regarding additional information and/or credit decisions

  • Works with the training department in the development of training materials on consumer loan origination, underwriting, and closing

  • Participates in various meetings and on various committees

  • Monitors overrides, policy exceptions, etc. to insure operation within established guidelines. Reviews reports generated through various sources to identify opportunities for improved productivity, profitability, and expense control

  • Trains and coaches staff in the development of underwriting and other related skills

  • Register and maintain registry as a Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) and Registry and in accordance with the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (the S.A.F.E. Act)

  • Assumes additional duties and responsibilities as requested

Competencies and Skills:

  • Excellent and demonstrated personal computer skills including the use of spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, and bank core applications

  • Experience with a credit scoring system

  • Forward thinking, transformational in approach to providing an outstanding client experience

  • Experience in providing underwritingsupport to high income, high net worth professionals

Work Experience Requirements:

  • 10 years consumer lending experience

  • System management/administration experience with a consumer loan origination/scoring system

  • Strong knowledge of applicable lending related regulations and compliance

  • Superior decision making and organizational skills with effective and professional communication skills

  • Professional work ethic, self-starter, innovative

  • 5 years supervisory experience that includes writing performance appraisals, making salary recommendations, and performing coaching and counseling

  • Experience with home equity lending in the State of Texas (preferred)

Education Requirements:

  • 4 year college degree or equivalent professional training and certification

  • 4 year college degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration (Preferred)

Other Qualifications:

  • Mortgage Loan Origination Eligibility as a Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) and Registry and in accordance with the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (the S.A.F.E. Act)
